Before I had broadband, I would always open any threads which I thought sounded interesting, maybe skim through them quickly, and then disconnect to read them.
I don't think I ever had more than at most 15 threads open at once though...
These days, with tabbed browsing, I have a habit of leaving websites open in a background tab for long periods of time...
