chestnut-bell
A small bell worn on the shirt or waistcoat of a dandy and covered by the coat. The bell, activated by a spring, was run whenever aan outworn funny story [or "chestnut] was told.
If this was still around, our friends would be a lot louder. Or at least dingier.
Also: ancient term for "old hat". Cool.

This still happens today - whenever I get a bit bored of hearing something, I just start tugging on my bell.
Moving on ...
I rather like the old expressions of surprise/alarm which pop up in things like Lord of the Flies:
OH, WHIZZO PIGGY!
ZOUNDS, RALPH HAS STOVED HIS FACE IN!
I'VE GOT THE CONCH - GADZOOKS!

Got the book, or an edition thereof, at least. Thanks though, mate.
And if you mean the bell, no promises; if you mean the words, I specifically promise NOT to honour your demand.

ye olde otherkinne

Instead of responding to the bad furry joke, I'll just inform you that "Ye olde" followed by anything resembling "booke shoppe" is horribly inaccurate. It's based on a character once called the Thorn, that indicates a "th" sound; sometimes it's left open at the top, and when modern-day fan-boys of what they wrongly referred to as Old English saw this, they thought it was a Y. It actually looks like a pointy P with the protrusion in the middle of the stick, not the top. And then to top it offthey put an "e" on the end of everything to make it sound old more; which has nothing to do with accuracy either. Gah.
There. Deflection complete. =p
