If it's only the radiation getting too high (not psi-emissions), then maybe you're just getting too close to the vehicles on the road. Some of them have really high levels of radiation around them.

Yes, the radiation in the "Red Forest" is encountered very often and is quite strong, but it's limited to relatively small patches, like areas around vehicles.
Offtopic: I don't know why you all call it Red Forest, in russian version it's called differently, as far as I know Red Forest area was cut from the SoC and devs intended to return it with Clear Sky.

what's it called in the russian version?
on the map of the zone, the area whit the brain scorcher is named "the red forest" (world wide version)

It's called "Radar" in russian version. Furthermore, I haven't encountered name "red forest" even a once in the game.

Names seem to be quite different between the russian and world versions. Even the NPC names are different. For us playing the non-russian version, that area is always referred to as 'Red Forest'.

I agree its a great game. I thought the 5 minute timer was a bunch of B.S. once you reached the main plant. I made it in with just seconds left and this somehow prevents the explosion, though you dont switch anything off:confused: . I would have liked to enjoy that last level and anticipated it to be the best, but no its a rushed ending:nono: .

It doesn't prevent the 'explosion'. You just escape from it. Once you get outside again you can hardly walk on the ground due to the consequences of that meltdown.

And that's not exactly an 'explosion', that's a 'radiation outburst'. More or less regular event in the game's reality.

All that happens is you get inside the sarcophagus, which is basically (I think) a big lead bunker designed to shield from radiation.

That don't explain the REAL last level though (after using the decoder from Pripyat to get into the locked room), where you're back outside again.
