One thing thats really bugging me about the game are the footsteps, which just sound like the same unconvincing clunking noise no matter which surface you walk on.
Every game should be forced by law to use the Thief style dynamic footsteps.

make your own... or import the thief ones... don't bitch at us for it...
Pemrick69 on 21/5/2002 at 16:38
If you hate the sounds that much, and like thiefs so much, go play thief, and, like tuco said, dont complain to us

I wish people would stop comparing MW to games like Thief. Thief was an action game with a very narrow focus. As a result, they could provide a great deal of depth to the gameplay. Morrowind has a very broad focus, allowing you to play any character type you can think of and do just about anything you want. The tradeoff is that in order to make the game playable and at least somewhat balanced, you lose some of the depth. I don't think the engine has the ability to differentiate different types of ground cover. Such a feature would only be of use in very limited circumstances, and wouldn't add much to the game for anyone not playing a thief character. This is how design decisions are made.
That said, you may not have noticed that the sound of your footsteps does have an affect on the game. If you wear boots, your footsteps get louder. The heavier the boots, the louder your steps, and the less effective your sneak skill will be.

Huh, that's strange...I'm Argonian and can't wear boots at all...yet I make such a loud clunk when I take a step...can't imagine what'd be like in heavy plate boots now =P

Or hey, I got the best suggestion of all. Just -turn- off the footsteps if you don't like them. You do realize that there's an option for that in the Sounds, yes? Honestly, I don't ever give a hoot about sound in a game, but damn it's sad if you are letting that minor little detail detract from the game.

I just cant stand that god almighty thud everytime you jump.
BattleMage on 22/5/2002 at 09:25
Good thing I am an orc. I sound like an elephant even when I "sneak" but I don't care. Even if people hear me they pretend they don't because of my big axe. :p

The point is, its not THAT difficult (considering the other problems they must have encountered making this) to have different footstep sounds for different textures. Even just a basic grass/wood/stone/tile set would have done. Having said that I'm playing a ripped version, as its not been released here in the UK yet, so maybe when I buy the CD, it'll sound a little better.

I would like to add/say it would be great and make me happy...make us happy if:
*The volume/sound of your own footsteps decrease the higher your sneak skill is.
*The volume/sound of your own footsteps increase with the more weight you carry.
