Because it was entirely plausible. Perhaps some of the better informed were clued in by technical or "insider" info but not the general pop. The motivations concealed in such a move by Eidos or Rampage have plenty of precedent in the corporate world. The fact that it was on April Fools gave a lot of pause, but then it could still have happened that way if some lawyer said "Get this done asap for reasons x and y, today." Im really glad it was a prank after all, the little cave Im messing with in T3ED is looking kinda neat.
