FMs to be distributed exclusively through Eidos? (LOOK OUT! IT'S A PRANK!) - by Gingerbread Man

I don't know which camp is more fun to watch during all of this:
A - The ones who think this is for real... :erm:
b - The ones who think this is the annual TTLG April Fools Prank...
c - The ones who know this is a joke and are having a great time playing both sides of the fence... :eww:
...or maybe imagining GBM and his "reaction" to all of this...the twisted soul he can be at times...
I can just see him dragging this out until monday...like his post mentions...
*trys not to stumble over all the puppet strings as he walks out the door*
BTW, I think it...erm...interesting...that this news is posted in the forums and not as news over at the Circle. Considering the impact this could have on the community IF were true... :weird:

Indeed. No reason an "April Fool's" prank has to end at precisely 12AM on April 2nd (not to mention which time zone we're dealing with at any given moment). It could last for as long as the prankers want it to, hehe.
*speculates that this is actually a stunt leading up to the unveiling of an actual EULA for the editor*
Annual pranks? Hmm... what were some others? *starts digging through last year's April threads*

That's different though. We're using not just the level editing program, but also the textures and music and other resources from T3. We're using their art assets in addition to the editor, and there's no agreement that clarifies whether or not we have permission to use those textures and things.
But you're not distributing the art and music with the levels. You distribute levels, but the program to run it and all the resources involved aren't being distributed with them. To return to the Notepad comparison, it's like distributing a text file, but not distributing Notepad and its internal resources with it.

Well if you're distributing blockfiles, the art is included. In any case, the Notepad analogy doesn't work, since you're distributing binary files that can be opened only with T3Ed (or possibly TDS the game) and the binary file is a rearrangement of prefabricated objects that Eidos owns.
Funky Drummer (on C64) is a much better analogy.
No new information until monday? Excellent. Let the wild speculation continue.

12:38AM here This is getting me worried

Well, no response as of yet, and I doubt GBM or the rest of the mods would hold this over our heads as an April Fools joke after the day has passed...so...
This is about damn idiotic. Not only is it a nice kick in the teeth for us, but also for Null, Krypt, and the rest that took time out of their busy days to get the editor ready.

Compare them with Microsoft Office documents, then.

Well I don't see anything posted at the Eidos forums either.
GBM did post an important April Fools joke about an Xbox forum (or did they actually create a whole forum for the joke?).

They gave something out free and without contract, verbal or written or implied. The rules (stated or not) cannot be changed after the game has already begun. Think back to GBM's posts - where he agrees that yes, there's no clause where a court would enforce pulling it back - so where is there a clause that says they would hold license over anything produced with that exact package they gave out for free, remembering that it was without contract, verbal or written or implied? Nowhere. The assets are theirs - your work is not.
As seems to be the nature of the T3 files you would have to distribute the assets with the maps. Thus they can easily call you down on copyright violation because you DON'T have a written permission of the owner to do so. The rules can not be changed afterwards. That's right. But the rules only apply to the editing tools itself. Not to the content that you create with it. So if half of the original Thief 3 content has to be put into the distribution files you have no license to distribute it.

If it WAS true, how the hell does anyone think it would be enforced?
Obviously by means of copyright law.

Through threatening TTLG? Fine, if TTLG would need to bow to the pressure, then means of distribution would find another way. It always does.
Well. The problem is, that these other ways would be illegal then. This might not be a problem for many but for some. Additionaly there is still the problem of passing on the information. The Thief crowd is not a seclusive small bunch of poeple it's a big society. So if you intend to use "other" ways to distribute you either have to limit it to a few select people or get busted.
