What I listen to doens't change how I live - how I live changes what I listen to.

While I admire that strength of character, it doesn't really make it necessary to post here to say you have nothing to say, does it? Thank you.

Oh yes, sorry for completely fucking up your thread, how thoughtless of me. Oh! Sorry again. Sorry!

If you're clever, you can both save face and the thread by a quick listing of five bands you at least rather like.

Hmmm, the posters here like a lot of the same bands. I'll step off the ranch and vote for a few bands that actually play instruments (apologies to anyone who chose the Pistols, Priest, Queen, etc, and yes, I like Depeche Mode and Joy Division, too). Maybe cuz I'm just old.
And of course we're not talking "greatest bands of all time" here, just most personally influential. These were the ones that influenced me.
1. XTC - At the time I 1st heard Black Sea, I'd never heard rock n roll as melodic and complex and rocking. I thought these guys were from another planet. For about a 10 year span, there wasn't another band that could touch them for pure creativity. Except for...
2. Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Need I say anything? I think Elvis is the greatest songwriter of our generation. I love Springsteen and Dylan, but people will be studying EC 100 years from now. And the Attractions were a great band, too. Amazing live show.
3. Buzzcocks - Punk, but with something more than anger. Loved the Pistols, loved The Clash, loved the Ramones, love Green day. Buzzcocks rocked as hard and as fast as these guys, but you also got the impression that they were actually enjoying themselves. I dug that.
4. The Replacements - Westerberg wrote stark, evocative lyrics(I can't live without your touch, but I die within your reach...), and these cats could rock, too. With just the right Blood Acohol level, they were an awesome live band as well. When they were too drunk (or sober), they sucked.
5. Janes Addiction - The only band since the seventies that could hold a candle to Led Zeppelin in the over-the-top-quasi-metal band category. They were both heavy and light (like L.Z. ). Damned good live, too.
Honorable Mention - Killing Joke, Guadacanal Diary, The Ramones, BeBop Deluxe, Scruffy the Cat, The Jayhawks, Redd Kross, Led Zeppelin, Ministry, The 77's, Fountains of Wayne.

No band changed my life. I listen to pretty much everything(?how I live changes what I listen to?) But my favourite band of all time is The Eagles because of their incredible lyrics, so in a way they do affect me.

Actually I thought you'd appreciate me not listing 5 bands that
didn't change my life, so everybody else wouldn't follows suit and turn this into a band name dumpfest.
* Radiohead - because I learnt to appreciate the guitar. And I learnt to love the radiohead guitar.
* System of A Down - because I always wanted a CD that was all killer and no filler, and Mezmerize just happened to be one.
* Deep Purple - because records are just so awesome.
Other than that it's pretty much just one here and one there, usually for no other reason than that I like the song.
