I've just started playing Arx again, and I've found that I can knock goblins out with my bare fists! I hadn't realised that fist fighting had much more favourable results then hacking at a goblin thirty times with a dagger. Is this the case with the majority of underworld denizens ?

Yeah, you can get quite skillful at unarmed in the Underworld games. At any rate it's the best way to combat doors ;).
