Try reading the thread before making an arse of yourselves.
I stand corrected and in shame - I DID misread the post I originally responded too... + I did have a few beers that night - not exactly the best combination of things when it came to responding to forum topics.
I do agree with the comments you made and I am sorry for the agro my reply may have caused. I am quite a passionate arguer when it comes to decent gameplay over graphics - I do get irritated by people when all they go on about is the graphical quality of a game without one iota of thought going towards the gameplay, story etc etc etc

So having two ending trees and six endings makes it 'on a rail'?

Compared to almost everything else that came out in the last 5 years.....YES!It IS a step back to a better game.If you don't think so then i guess thats your opinion.I am sticking to mine.
PLEASE educate me what awesome games have come out in the past 5 years that I have missed?I haven't seen any recommendations in the Bioshock forum.
Was it Quake 4?
Was it WOW?
Perhaps Clive Barker's Jericho?
They're SHIT. That's the point. You have lowered your standards to modern games so when you see things like Bioshock you see them as new, inventive, a step in the right direction, and all those other idiotic catch phrases that have been coined for it.
Bioshock isn't a step in the right direction, it's a tiny addition of RPG elements to make a straight-up shooter seem unique. And that leaves it as nothing special.
Stalker embodies the things that Bioshock attempts. If that isn't your sort of game, then you should be right at home with current shooters.

Well, I guess they way I see it (running off three hours of sleep over the last few days, so I might feel differently in the morning...) is if you only have crappy games to play, then you will eventually have to either lower your standard of gameplay, or just not play games. A great game comes out once every few hundred years, and the quality of the game probably won't change if you lower your expectation of even the crappy games and just play them for what they are...
So, enjoy what games we have now, because I doubt things will get better.

If we each buy several million copies of the next good game that comes out...

I just finished System Shock 1 & 2, it took me about 4-5 days total to finish both in a row, and I have to admit that it was a very very wonderful experience I had not experienced before. Somehow I just had got stuck somewhere always, but this time with little help from the internet and great determination, I finished them both. And boy was it a good experience :)
I actually got a bit bored to Bioshock so I haven't finished it yet. I got bored of Stalker as well when my saves didn't work after a patch, so I'm yet to finish that one as well. The last new game I finished was The Witcher, which btw is a wonderful crpg. But then again, even that one doesn't compare to fallout, the almighty king of crpgs!
I guess all new games always suck badly when compared to a classic several years back. I mean, I guess System Shock is to modern fps what Fallout is to Modern RPG. I'm actually hoping that Fallout 3 would kinda fill the gap we have about really good games nowadays.
Nevertheless, the quality of new games has in fact improved a lot, after a long period of crappy games. If you think about it, there was the "golden era" of critically acclaimed, but poorly selling titles like System Shock and Fallout. But because they didn't make the company thrive, the people with the money got scared and wanted to make profit. That's when all the crazy ideas got shut down and we started getting even dumber and dumber games.
But now there's this tiny little trend going on where games suddenly get a bit more complex and meaningful than what the majority of games have used to be for so long time. So I like to hope that this time good games will sell a lot, because that only leaves room for MORE good games to come up. People might accidentally start believing that really meaningful and good games can actually make a lot of poor sods enjoy their time with the game and invest some cash almighty on it!
And when the developers are rich and loaded with cash, maybe then they bring back all the good features and ideas from the good ol' golden times of computer gaming... Or have false ideas of godhood and make bad games again ;)
Maybe once I get my system working again, I'll play Bioshock and Stalker and imagine they're really good games, and forget I just finished the best two FPS games in history of computer gaming a short while ago, and both of them were ugly as hell ;)

And by playing through it single-player first, you lose out on an incredible co-op experience.
My wife and I played through SS2 co-op as our first run through. Trust me.... sharing the experience doesn't degrade it.
I have played the game really many times, but then one of my body's got hold of a copy and he wanted to play the first run through in co-op mode.. i did warn him that it could destroy the experience, but he insisted, and we did complete the game..
He still loves the game, and he still has it on top of his all time favorite games.. :) So for his sake it didn't mater either..
