You KNOW a lot of us are thinking about the "race" to have the first FM out there. I'm thinking it will be in about 2 to 3 weeks from now, some little lame mission. I dunno if I'd rather see that, or see none at all until a good one is released in a couple months that has some serious work involved.
So that's the question, would you rather have some low quality and maybe even downright lame missions, but in a few short weeks, or would you rather have nothing until some good missions come out in 2 or 3 months or more?

I predict I'll make a good mission, about 1 1/2 to 2 years out. I have too much T2 work I need to finish up. (Well, maybe a contest mission sooner, I have a few ideas...).

Why not have a contest for the first FM? Limitation? Fit the mission inside four rooms. or under a certain memory limit. That might make for some interesting small scale offerings.

I think the only reason we haven't seen any crappy FMs already is because the process for distributing maps hasn't been worked out yet. I predict that as soon as it is made relatively easy to release a map, we'll see several 2-room maps using one texture and blasted with huge radius lights, populated by a single guard standing still facing a wall :p Hopefully I'll be proven wrong, but that seems to be the way the first couple months pan out when a new editing toolset is released for any game.

I for one hope people keep these test maps to themselves (unless it's to help others learn). I would hope the Thief community would hold themselves to a fairly high quality standard and actually finish something before unleashing it, but I'm sure you're right.

Looking forward to the first lame mission in a week or three. 'twill be a test of packaging up and distributing the things if nothing else. Might even be fun or slightly cool? Don't think it will be one of mine though. I'll be releasing some little lame mission in a few months or maybe a year ;)

That depends on the purpose of releasing it. Look! Here's how to do trick the archers into thinking they're drunknen peasants throwing bottles was a one room mod, but it really had only one purpose, show off the new trick.
The second point to releasing unfinished work is for feedback, you can say "here's my architecture! there's nothing to steal but check out the cool looking windows!" this sort of pointless release does let the fanbase see a sort of tranparency to the progress, as well as giving them a chance to provide feedback and suggestions especially useful to first time modders.
