I tried 1920*1200 Ultra setting on my box - 3.2 GHz Q6600 and an oc'd 5850 - it ran, but dipped down below 30 FPS at times during the intro sequence. I'm running it now at High setting with 8x FXAA and it's fast enough for an Elder Scrolls game. Usually mid 40s. I'm going to turn shadows off, because too often they just look godawful, like the one cast by the chandelier in the intro. I'd rather not see them at all. That should help performance as well.
I haven't done any kind of .ini tweaking - just using the High setting as defined by the game.

I'd be interested to know what peoples system specs are and how their graphics detail level is set based on that.
E8500, 4GB of RAM, GTX260.
The game is running remarkably well. I have almost everything on high or ultra (including ultra shadows). Only Radial Blur Quality and Decal Quality are on notch below the max. And so far the game is always running between 25 and 60 fps on my 1920x1200 monitor. Better than expected.
I wonder if someone knows if it is possible to slow down the day/night cycle ? In Oblivion there was an ini-change for that. But you had to change it before starting a new game. I wonder if it works for Skyrim too.
Edit: found the answer.
Yep, it's even easier. No need to start a new game.
Use the console command: "show timescale" to see the current speed. The default should be 20. That would imply that an in-game day lasts slightly over an hour in real time. I prefer longer days in-game. So do a "set timescale to 6" in the console. Your in-game day should now last 4 hours in real-time.

Cool, sounds like Lucan Valerius in Riverwood is voiced by Stephen Russell/Garrett! Pretty hilarious that he wants you to catch a Thief. ;)

I just met Lucan. And yes, I believe you're right.

I'm about 8 hours in, 8 level character (archer/hunter/thief) and I barely scratched the surface of the game. Just explored a bit of terrain between Helgan, Riverwood and Falkreath, found a tower with rather unpleasant squatters inside... Barely made it out alive. The world is beautiful and looks huge, can't wait for another session with the game.

Argh, what's the console command to see FPS? I can't find it anywhere, I wanna see how well I'm faring.

Commands like tm, tfc and showracemenu appear to have all stayed through Beth's titles in the last years, so I'd say try tdt. Or if that doesn't work anymore, you can always get Fraps.

Well, keeping your (completely batshit insane and suicidal) horse alive is nearly as hard in Skyrim as it was in Oblivion. Damn that thing attacks anything that moves, just need to park it somewhere safe and hope there's isn't too strong foes sullying about.
Smithing is really fun btw and it's awesome to actually get good gear from it (in so many games the found stuff is way better than smithed).

This is awesome. Better than I'd hoped for.
*continues gushing all over the place, then starts to refocus attention to the game minimized in the taskbar*
See you kids in a couple months.

You know for a game that involves walking 90% of the time looking at the scenery, it really drops the ball on presentation. Uncharted 2 snow was so much better.
