They weren't secret though, were they?

Fine. Be a nit-picker.
My complaint still stands though. The lab/secret lab level is a much overused cliché of FPS games.

Having labs in a SCIENCE fiction setting where the main theme is technological development kind of make sense to me. If I wanted a book, I would go to a library. If I wanted money, I would go to a bank. If I want access to a new kind of technology, well, I would go to a lab. Wouldn't you?

Well, it's not just that. It's the fact that that particular setpiece shows up across several genres.
Although I've no strong opinion with labs being prevalent, it's the "destroy/disable/turnoff a generator" that seems to be in every single god-forsaken game that has me in a torch and pitchfork mood. I remember playing Call of Duty and even there I had to take out a few of those.

Cliche or not, can you think of any other single act that, in the real-life modern world, can so effectively and immediately disable operations over a wide area?
It's kind of like complaining that so many racing games take place on roads.
Jashin on 21/4/2008 at 16:58
It's nothing like real life. In real life it is neither effective nor immediate when trying to cut power to an area. You don't walk up to a furnace-looking thing and push a button.
It's a videogame convention and a gameplay crutch that frankly is being used too often to prop up and "diversify" unimaginative retreads.

No, you don't. You either kill main power from the control room, or you punch a rocket into a transformer.
Either way, in your usual drooling fashion you've managed to miss my point that taking the electricity away is frequently the easiest way to disable a large area. Second would be taking down centralized communications.
Jashin on 22/4/2008 at 01:54
Yea, I'm sure these advanced beings who design these advanced generators that power star ships and crap would leave their grids around without any backup power.
This is why I don't want to go down the retarded hypothetical route that you insist on going.
You're welcome to continue.

What are our alternatives, incidentally?
ZylonBane on 22/4/2008 at 15:46
Yeah, what kind of point are you trying to make, Jash? That video games aren't 100% realistic? Well gosh, you sure got me there. I imagine next you'll be complaining about being able to carry a ton of weapons and survive a shotgun blast to the face.
