I don't know when it happened but suddenly, a couple of days ago, I was able to login and see the forum but could not post or reply to any of the toics.
I finally determined that I was able to interact with the forum normally (if that word actually applies to this forum!) if I used either Internet Explorer or the IE Tab Add-on for Firefox.
Just posting this in case anyone else is having the same problem. It would be an added bonus if someone were to figure out exactly why Firefox or vBulletin is behaving this way.

Which version of Firefox and which add-ons do you have installed? Does clearing your private data and logging back in make a difference?
The only time I've seen something similar to what you're experiencing is when you change your email address before you've confirmed it. However, that doesn't explain why it would work in IE.

It seems like I started having problems between this site and Firefox right after updating Firefox ...
mudi on 2/11/2009 at 23:24
Could be a problem with a corrupt firefox profile. Once or twice I've had to reset my firefox profile to get things working the way they should.

How do you reset the profile?
mudi on 3/11/2009 at 05:38
Close all firefox windows, go start->run, and type firefox -profilemanager
Deleting your profile will take all bookmarks/extensions/whatever with it, so you might just want to create a temporary profile first to see if that fixes it. (The profile manager will let you do that) If it does fix it, back up your bookmarks and restore them after you make a new profile.

OK, I found the problem. Somehow AdBlock Plus had a huge section blocking a lot of images from the site. I remember blocking a couple of images in posts that I found particularly annoying and I must have selected a wider area than I'd realized.
I have now removed all those blocks and can reinstate them one at a time until I find the one at fault.
I don't think I could live without AdBlock Plus: Element Hiding Helper. I will just have to be a little more careful in using it.
I guess you could say this whole problem was my own stupid fault but then we all knew that already. The problem is how to solve the problem without destroying everything else.
Thanks for all the help offered, I'm sure it materially lead to the solution I found. :)
