So yesterday I finished my fresh playthrough of Thief Gold and I was going over my stat screens when I noticed that the objective to get back to the streets was not completed in Thieves' Guild.
I remember that I wanted to close the pressure door leading to Donal's house and to retrieve a rope arrow, which I used to descend into the gamblig den. So I finished the mission right where I started - at the entrance to Overlord's Fancy.
It's not really a problem or anything, as I was able to finish the game fine and I noticed it only now, but I wonder what happened there. Does the starting area not count as "getting back to the streets" but somehow it has a mission end marker?
Here are the screenshots.

Did you by any chance go out of the door leading to the streets, then go back inside and were inside when the mission ended?
Something similar happened to me in Song Of The Caverns. All I needed to do was climb a ladder, open the metal cover, then climb out onto the streets. But at the top of the ladder I tried to mantle out but instead he jumped up into the air then fell back down the shaft back into the sewer. But before I could think of climbing back up the ladder the mission ended but with the objective to reach the streets unchecked.
So maybe once you cross a line the game begins its few seconds countdown to completion, but independently of this it keeps track of where you are, only giving you the tick when you are in the streets, and removing it if you go back.
Did cause me some concern because I was attempting to Titanium Man the game, and wondered whether this was a bust since you might pedantically say that I did not complete all objectives. Then thought screw it, and just continued on with the next mission :)

Huh, so it does happen. No, I didn't go back in, but I might have been standing fairly close to the entrance.

I don't for certain about TG, but in T2 it is possible for this to happen although I don't know of any OMs in which it does. Basically, if at any point in time all visible goals are completed, then the mission end sequence triggers, even if you then step back out of the "return to start" location and uncheck that goal.

Back in the good ol' Thief times we had lots of fun to complete the missions while doing the opposite of the mission goals and not ticking off as many of them as possible (like not showing your papers in Undercover and climb over the garden wall). Works for quite some missions. I'm not so sure about T1, but T2 does track your location for "go back where you started" type goals.

Sure it does, but there are measures in place if configured properly to still require the player to go back there when all other goals are done. To do otherwise would be a bug.

It does not need to track your position for that goal. You can just have some trigger zones placed on the map that tick off the objective once you enter such a zone and not care about what you do afterwards. Some quick experiments with TG:
Undercover
(on "normal")
* If you leave through the main gate and go back in, the objective gets unticked and the mission continues.
* If you leave over a balcony and get back inside, get objective stays ticked off and the mission ends.
* There's really no way around ticking off the "go in through the main entry" objective, regardless of whether you get in over the wall on either side or climb the temple roof and jump into the garden or the cemetery. Although there are a few places outside, but inside the compound that do not trigger this objective, walking into the buildings always completes it (at least I could not find a way in without).
Bafford's
(on "hard")
* Once you leave the compound and tick off the completion objective, it stays ticked off no matter what you do.
* Hover, it does not tick off if you leave over the roofs as long as you do not go down to the street, and even if you do there are "remote" areas not ticking it off. You can walk the city roofs to your hearts content.
* If you kill a servant near the exit and the walk out before the mission fails, the "get out" objective won't get ticked off and you still lose.
* If you leave the mission and then kill a servant before you win, the "get out" objective stays ticked off, but you lose because of killing. (The "no kill" objective has failed and all others are ticked off, looks quite funny.)
So, in Bafford's it looks like they've used the "permanent trigger in exit zone" approach, while in Undercover there is some position tracking.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply it tracks your location by responding. A go-to-location goal is generally triggered by a roombrush, but if they're managed as goals with no type then other things like bounds triggers can be used. But not by constantly tracking the player's location.
