Big Spoilers Obviously
At the end of Area 51, I made the decision to join Helios and "rule earth with wisdom and absolute power" as the idea of merging with an AI to end the game seemed intriguing, but when I did do it, there was just a short cutscene and I still felt a little in the dark about what was going on. So I reloaded, killed Page and joined the Illuminati, which seemed a slightly more satisfying ending. Don't get me wong, Deus Ex is a fantastic game and I've loved every minute of it, but was anyone else a little disappointed by the brief ending(s)?

I wasn't disappointed, no. They're not full motion video cut scenes like a Final Fantasy, but they did the job of giving a sense of completion (above and beyond simply being the end).

I thought the Illuminati ending was the best, on a moral level. Not many games take that kind of route, seeing how you want to change society. I also like how it ended with quotes rather than a long cutscene that shows everyone happily ever after.

Endings.
Felt the Helios merger was too short....lacking somthing.
In IW, they really make you wonder how JC merges with Helios AND destroys Area 51....my best guess is that Helios leaving Area 51 could bring down the global network since it was all routed through there, but that seems counterproductive to what Helios was meant to do in the first place.
The problem with the Illuminati endings in both games is that a lot of effort is made to make them seem "mostly harmless." Even a benevolent dictator is a dictator.
Blowing the place up was my favorite, but maybe because I have too much Tong in me. :joke:

I guess JC combining with Helios isn't the end in itself.
He could just walk upstairs (or wherever, not sure of the relative directions) then blow the place up as well.
:D

I do all of the endings after an appropriate save.
It's my game. I want to do it all.

After purchasing Deus Ex GOTY edition in 2001, installing it in 2004, and finally getting around to playing it in October 2005, I finished the game after several marathon sessions that stretched far into the night.
What a fantastic game! I'm kind of glad I waited until I had a PC powerful enough to run it smoothly. I tried it on my old machine and it ran pretty choppy on the higher resolutions.
My preferred ending is to join forces with the Illuminati; I'd rather be in the tent pissing out then the other way around. Joining with Helios runs counter to the sentiments JC expresses to Morbius. Plus Tong's solution is just plain dumb: you're taking down the global network, not destroying all technology or mankind's knowledge of it.

To me, the illuminati ending is by far the worst - it puts you on the same level of power as the rest of the illuminati, meaning that if another Bob Page was to arise you would be as powerless as the rest of the illuminati the first time around.
My favourite ending was the Tong one, largely because it had the coolest cutscene.

You shouldn't attempt to play the way you believe the character would. You should try to make the character what they are. At least, that's the way it SHOULD be.
I don't think Tong really wanted to destroy all technology. He was scientist himself. I think his goal was just limited to getting rid of global electronic communication. Whether that's a good idea is another question.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind...?
