I have done a search and can't find an answer:-
I've completed the siege of Kvatch and the only quest I have is find the Heir, the guards and townsfolk all direct me to Salvian Matius, (who's in civvies now) but he just tells me Kvatch was rebuilt before and thanks.
So what should I do? just travel on in the hope of picking up the main quest line or is there a way to complete this quest without going back to an earlier save game.

Martin (AKA the heir) is one of the folks that was hiding out in the cathedral. They're all down in the encampment now. Look for a guy in a robe.

I'm obviously out of RPG practice as I presumed this was a quest bug rather than an option :erg:

Out of curiosity, weren't the compass arrows pointing the way to him? When you make a given quest your active one, the game (usually) points to exactly where you need to go.
