At long last, I will be able to play Ultima Underworld again, or so I hope. I've only been connected to the internet for a month now, so this was actually the first time I found a way to play UW again. After reading lots of threads on this forum about playing UW in XP via dosbox or the patch by Sir Cabirus, I re-re-re-reinstalled UW. Using Dosbox I can now play the game, but not quite satisfying. The game works normally, just like the music, until I get past the intro. It runs too slow! Although you can raise the dosbox speed by pressing ctr-f12, it still doesn't work properly. When I raise the speed, the music starts stuttering, when I lower it again, my movement starts stuttering and I can't find something of a balance between the two. Next to that I can't play UW2 with dosbox at all!.
So I installed the patch by Sir Cabirus, wich works good (no stuttering movement), but offers me no music/sound whatsoever. Then I read about the vsmd-sound. This I installed as well, but it doesn't seem to work either....The game works, but still no sound...
I'm wondering if someone knows a solution to this. Where did I go wrong. I copied the entire game to my hd, from there I installed it, patched it with the Sir C-patch and start it up with vsmd...I am not the tweaker-type, so, apart from some minor changes, I can't get any further...

Hi there,
No guarantees of a solution, but it generally helps if you tell us about your system (bear in mind that this applies to pretty much any tech support request when it comes to PCs).
Operating System (and service patches, if any), CPU, RAM, Video Card and drivers, Sound Card(!) and drivers, DirectX version, and anything else that may seem relevant...

have you got the fully updated version of VDMSound? works a charm for me!
(yup, I also use the patch, of course ;) )

After I wrote this message, I still could not resist trying some more things. This was how I found out that I was able to run "uwsound", only after I finished another install-option, which was located inside the UW-folder (the other one being outside the uw-folder; the one that creates underom1 on your hd)...Doing this, the program suddenly detected a soundcard (don't see why it did not before...) and, although speech is still not working, the sound is (i.e. soundeffect and music). :D
Of course "installing the game" sounds quite logical, but since I already did that, I didn't see any reason why I should use this install-option too. But as my impatience grew...
So there I am, again after all these years...in my favorite dungeon with it's beautiful music.
Thank you guys for replying and doing what you can to help others play UW as well!

It seems to me that its easier to get things running in DOS (real DOS. Like, 6.22) now that I've learnt how to screw around in Win95.
I just bought (for A$150) a new PC: 200MHz, running DOS 6.22. I'm loving it so much (I missed DOS and all the gaming goodness it entails.) that I don't care that my new 1.2GHz PC died yesterday (the warranty died last week. figures)
