I just hope they stick to the gameplay (combat wise) of the original, and don't go in a more action-RPG direction.

Emotional attachment. I was 9 or so years old when I first played this, and it is quite a moving game.
Watch the System Shock community bare arms if the SS1 remake is found to be another Bioshock.
It's also a big part of my gaming history, which is why I'm OK with there being a remake - it's nice to a see a game that good get some attention. If the re-make isn't up to snuff, it won't alter my happy memories of playing the game or prevent me from playing the original, which runs fine from Steam. If the SS1 community get bulging forehead veins in response to a re-make, that's their issue - exactly the same logic applies. It seems a bit petty to treat IP as "sacred" and untouchable by people who didn't even have a hand in making it.

Hmm, doesn't the PC version have an inferior MIDI soundtrack? The soundtrack is almost half the experience it's that strong, fuck playing it with MIDI music. Presumably there's a fix for this issue though given the glory of PC?

"nah"
There can only be a net gain if it's good, otherwise it's a loss. If it is not good it stains the name, wastes your time and money, and quite possibly pisses you off by shitting on something dear to you.
faetal on 13/12/2015 at 23:34
How can it possibly be a loss!?
"Oh no, my System Shock install no longer works because a more recent version has been released somewhere"
GMDX Dev on 13/12/2015 at 23:42
Getting your hopes up for it whilst it is in development and spending your time in its wake as we are now?
By then paying for shit?
Wasting your time playing it?
Getting pissed off whilst playing it because it's shit?
Knowing gamers, you then go to forums to bash the game?
Then there's the whole principle of it and the rape of art. Game doesn't even need a remake, especially not in any modern Square-Enix driven vision.
faetal on 13/12/2015 at 23:59
If you believe that, you're free to ignore the entire thing on principle. Everyone is. If they do that, nothing is lost. If even one person buys the new product and enjoys it?
Net gain.
The only way art gets raped is if it is not funded in the first place. Go and kickstart something you like the sound of - do something positive rather than whine about something which is happening anyway and may actually be enjoyable to someone whether you like it or not?

To be honest GMDX and faetal, I think you're both being overly anal in your stance. GMDX does bring up a good point about remakes often being a let down and getting the hardcore fans of a title disappointed, but faetal is also right it is partly their own fault for getting so invested and refusing anything but a slighlty graphically upgraded rehash.

Story doesn't make a lot of sense but it is charming and interesting in its own right. Gameplay isn't particularly notable but it does the job.
You know, I think the true genius of Final Fantsies is that even if the stories are a little  and cliche, they are paced very well and manage to make you feel invested / care. RE gameplay, I actually liked the ATB and materia system (even if it could've been more complex), the only other I liked better was perhaps the Job system from FF5.
GMDX Dev on 14/12/2015 at 03:30
Yeah, I like the gameplay too, but the systems do need tweaks. It all too often falls back on the select OP stuff and spamming attack. Not enough strategy. And the summons are horrible in that they go on way too long and cannot be skipped.
FF5 job system is great. 5 probably has the best gameplay/combat systems.
faetal on 14/12/2015 at 09:53
Now imagine a bunch of entitled fanboys whining that the original didn't need improvement and that your hard work will ruin
their game.
Koob - I am being overly anal because as I said, it's a bugbear. I don't get how anyone can feel like their personal enjoyment of IP gives them some kind of ownership of it, which then gives them some entitlement to complain about the future of the IP. It's like when people berate musicians or bands for putting out material which is different to what they like. It's as if they think the band works for them or something.
