Since a couple of you mentioned Hot Fuzz: am I the only one who preferred Shaun of the Dead? While I enjoyed the later film, I also thought that it lacked the freshness of Shaun, added to which I got bored with the Hot Fuzz ending, which was basically the same joke building over the last half hour or so.

I think Shaun of the Dead was probably the more inventive of the two and less reliant on straight up parody/references, instead mixing more original content. It also had a stronger emotional core than Hot Fuzz but I guess due to being less of a zombie genre fan and finding Hot Fuzz more rewatchable it trumped for me.

I guess it'd be the stronger emotional core that you mention - I tend to get tired of comedies after an hour or so if there's nothing that engages me emotionally. (It caught me by surprise how well Shaun of the Dead mixed its comedy with emotional bits: e.g. the scene with his stepdad in the car, his mum's death and zombification.)

I'm surprised nobody mentioned (
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/) Old Boy.
And please, if you're gonna recommend someone to watch Eraserhead, please don't recommend it on YouTube ! What's wrong with you !!?!

Coincidentally enough, I watched Eraserhead last night and am still trying to figure out which bits were symbolic and which bits were just David Lynch taking the piss. I'm also somewhat deterred from having children.

I'm pretty sure the bit where they take the guy's befuddled head and make erasers out of it was Lynch taking the piss.
Lynch's description of the movie is pretty accurate - 'A dream of dark and troubling things.'
Of course, for everyone not offended by the movie there's a couple dozen who are, and of course many see it as pretentious malarkey and a case of being bizarre for the sake of being bizarre. Worth the look to find out which group you'd splinter off to!
And while the effort is appreciated dema, I don't think Youtube is the best way to see the movie. Nothing beats free, but the movie's an experience best liberated from the browser window. Plus it's split into like 10 parts, which isn't very convenient.

Hard to call it bizarre for the sake of it, since it so distinctly captures certain emotions that would be difficult to commit to any medium.

Not my viewpoint - I think the film's still fundamentally creepy and provocative today - but there are certainly people who'd give it less credit regardless of the emotions it evokes. Some people actively hate it. I recall that someone I knew disliked it enough that he used his VHS copy of it as a prop for a wobbly desk.

"distinctly captures emotions" god I sound like an even bigger tool than the guy who used the tape to hold up his desk

...I still haven't seen a David Lynch film:(
It's on my list, though! I'm thinking of starting with Blue Velvet, if only because of my crush on the young Kyle MacLachlan.
