Another technique that turned out to be quite rewarding in the end - I originally joined the Thieve's Guild and later the Fighter's Guild for the quests. When this quest came up I got some song and dance about how I really didn't want the book anyway if I was really a True And Loyal Thief. Later, even with 100% speechcraft and personality she still wouldn't yield. But by then I had the skill to pick her pocket :) and deliver the book anyway. Her "alright, Big Shot, so you got it anyway" attitude later was well worth the wait.

FWIW, you're right; she's rigged to not hand it over if you're in the Thieves Guild.

IIRC, picking pockets depends on Security; the Security master just happens to live in Balmora (check out the list of masters; his name eludes me).
Alternately, you can either taunt her a few times until she attacks, or you can cast a modified 'frenzy humanoid' on her to force her to attack you (search on here for frenzy humanoid if you want the details on that).

Ah yes, the security master trainer is a High Elf called Hecerinde-he lives in a house next to the river (on the east side and towards the north end of town) in Balmora. I stumbled across him by accident and he was quite snotty. I asked him for directions to something and he said "Look around, you lazy fetcher." But he might like you better if you're in the Thieves guild.

How to pick pockets:
Approach your target. Go into sneak mode (default is ctrl key). While sneaking, and when the target's name is displayed above him/her, hit the space bar (as if talking to them). Their inventory screen will appear. Pilfer away and hope you don't get caught. Practise, practise, practise.
This info is in the manual, btw.

Haven't you already asked this in another thread? The short answer is, join both- I don't believe there were conflicts of interests there, even later in the game.
