First apologize if this has already been covered but nothing found on search.
Infiltrated, take hist sap, went to town with them, wake up, go back to town to find slaughter of course.
Sent back to blackwood, 3 guys on first floor tried to kill me.
Anyway I go upstairs and hes not aggro so I just stole his key.
Went into basement and two more dudes try to kill me.
Ok so how the hell do I destroy the tree now ?
NM Quest was broken, loaded an earlier save and it worked fine.

Hint: What do you have to work with near the tree?

Thanks but I already got it. First time in I died. Lighting was taking half of my health a shot. Next time I went in more ready for a fight and skipped the dialog and broke the quest in the process.
So I reloaded a save game and then I had no problems.
