Field generator for escape pod? Help.

I have the GOG version of this game, and I also have this problem.

* I kill the enemy bashing the destroyed console up in the room above.
* I shoot the enemy down by the shuttle.
* For lack of anything else to do, I shoot the shuttle til it explodes. Then Shodan messages me, and tells me to get the resonator by hacking the replicator.
* I hack the replicator, and get the resonator.
* I climb down and stand before the shield generator, and it has the selection frame around it, and the name of it is in the text display at the top of the screen.
* I drag the replicator over the shield generator. I release the left mouse button. Nothing happens, the icon just sits on the screen where the mouse pointer goes. I click left mouse button, nothing. I click right mouse button, nothing. All I can do is move the mouse back to the inventory and click to place it there again.

I see people on the internet with this problem, then they go.. "problem solved" and never describe what they did. Or they say something like "I clicked right mouse button" and that turns out to be no help at all. There's somewhere that alludes to it being a bug, and says that if you do things out of order, this happens and you need to reload earlier and do it in the right order. Something about not destroying the shuttle (as I did by shooting it) until the resonator is in the shield generator - but to get the resonator, you need to trigger Shodan by destroying the shuttle.

Is there something I am missing here?

Alright, I finally figured out where I went wrong. For some reason I assumed that both ladders at either side of the room above the shuttle bay led down to the same shuttle bay. The one with the working "deactivate shuttle shield" machine leads down to the shuttle you shoot, and it's shield generator - the one I was trying to put the resonator in - is just a distraction. The one with the destroyed "deactivate shuttle shield" machine leads down to the one with the shield generator that you need to put the resonator in.

Hope this clarifies this problem for the other people out that get it.
