NV probably has an ace up his sleeve but before he answers, don't use that tool for converting INTO 3ds. Use bintoe and eto3ds, which are tools provided in the shocked toolkit. They run in a dos shell, taking the model as an arguement. so take a bin and run it through bintoe and then run the e file through eto3ds. Then if that doesn't open nicely in max using the import feature, open and resave in accutrans and try again to import in 3ds. Once you get that far, do whatever model editing you like and when you want to convert back, then use 3ds to bin, with its GUI awesomeness. It will convert the .3ds file you EXPORT from max into a bin file with a couple clicks....very convenient.

3ds to bin will convert from .bin -> .3ds, too. Just go to open a file and select "Binary format Looking Glass object (*.bin)" from the Files of Type box.
Oh, and I seem to recall that there's a bug that it won't open files with the .BIN extension, they need to be lowercase (.bin). Unfortunately, I lost the source code for 3ds2bin so I can't fix that anymore.

When I do this, it opens a window called "Conversion Information" which simply states "Not a 3DS file!"
I've had a few different responses opening various .bin files, however they all crash when I attempt to export to 3DS with a wide variety of messages such as "runtime error 13 - mismatch"
It would be nice if I could use the frontend for conversion as I'm allergic to command lines but I will also try the original program.
In the meantime, I'm going back to UV mapping hell :p

That happens if the file has an uppercase .BIN extension. Change the extension to a lowercase .bin and try again.

Minus one point to me for blatantly ignoring your advice the last time D:
Seems I'm good to go for now, aside from not knowing which files to edit (what are all the mysterious abreviations?!) and being generally mystified by the texture setup. Hell, I can't even find the shotgun textures and it seems they're cut up into multiple files anyhow...

That's a very colorful can opener. :)
