I can't let this thread continue without contributing what I think is the best 8-bit soundtrack of all time: (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmGp_uMqAoo) Shadowgate.
The track starting at 3:05 brings back fond memories of being an eleven years old, spending the night at a friends house during summer break. It was 1 in the morning, we were playing the game on an old wooden console TV, and eating freshly popped popcorn. Man...that's some hellacious nostalgia right there.
Always liked the sewer music from Metal Gear

I was searching for a thread to post that in, and that old one came up. After I posted it I decided that I wanted to look for a bit more of a recent thread, so I removed it and looked again, choosing this one.

I see, good idea.
Anyway, the music from the Silent Hill series is absolutely fantastic. All composed by Akira Yamaoka.
The score of Alone in the Dark (2008) is spectacular. Easily the best part of the game.
EDIT: Oh yeah, Bionic Commando: Rearmed's score kicks fucking arse.

I tried out Blizzard's new Echos of War set. ((
http://www.echoes-of-war.com/)) ... while there's some pleasant nostalgia there from Warcraft 2, Starcraft, and Diablo, overall none of the music in the set seems as good as the original tracks from the games.
Had a play through the (
http://www.echoes-of-war.com/?media/sample-tracks) sample tracks, and I absolutely love
The Eternal Conflict (Diablo Tristram track).
The Starcraft one isn't really doing it, though. Whilst I have played WoW, I never played any of the expansions so can't comment on anything to do with Wrath of the Lich King.

Seconded on Silent Hill. The first game is the creepiest soundtrack
ever.
I've been on a Sonic nostalgia kick lately. Heard the Carnival Night zone theme from Sonic 3 and it triggered a few days' worth of nightmares. Fuck that zone. I
did find (

Fallout 3's ambient soundtrack is 500% better when you add music from the following sources:
Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics
Stalker SoC
Paranoia (the HL1 mod)
Half-Life 2 and the Episodes (only a few selected tracks, mind you)
Poke646 (the Audion Industries theme, really soft, quiet and foreboding)
Aphex Twin's
Selected Ambient Works Volume II (it was only proper)
Desiderii Marginis (specifically, the albums
Songs Over Ruins and
That Which Is Tragic and Timeless, great albums both)
Robert Rich and Lustmord's
Stalker(
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=147176) Ghoul Detail
I noticed a weird thing though. The game only seems to pick a few songs to play, and they all seem to be random every time the game loads.

I was listening to the Mirror's Edge music for a while, and I don't mean the CD that comes with it with the six remixes of the second-best song named Still Alive. I mean the actual music from the game. With a few exceptions, it's sublime ambiance.

Yeah the music is quite good.
I've just finished my second run through of 'Pathologic' and I quite like the music in that too. The piece that plays when you are out in the 'steppe' is moody brilliance.
The World Of Goo soundtrack has also entered my favourites now.

Haven't seen it mentioned, so - NOLF and NOLF2. Even though the most recent copy of NOLF I bought was one of the ones that said "includes bonus CD soundtrack" but didn't actually.
Also, the Ken Woodman tune that they used for the main theme of (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq5ij5RqZ9E) Space Channel 5 is great. And I can't forget Rez, although that gets bonus points for how the music was integrated into the gameplay.
While I'm on a Dreamcast rant - Jet Set Radio. Most of the non-score tracks suck (really the standouts are the Guitar Vader stuff and in Future, the Cibo Matto tracks) but the Hideki Naganuma stuff is great.
