Ultima Underworld
-------------------
What classes do you favour, are there any which are unbalanced or does it depend upon your skills ?

I always prefered Tinker, or Monk.
Unfortunately in UW2, I found a bug, if you go over 60,000 experience or so, your carrying capacity goes to like 4 stones maximum

I like Sheperd (most balanced of all) and Druid (also the character that suited me best in Ultima IX Ascension

What is ultima 9 like in comparison to Ultima 8, I have heard that it is even more arcade/ tomb raider like.
Brad Schoonmaker on 27/8/2000 at 01:16
Actually, I thought that Ultima 9 was like Underworld, but most of the time outdoors. It just seemed so much like the impression that I got from Underworld. Destard was a very tricky dungeon.
Ultima 8 was a good game, too, but I didn't think it was arcade like.
Tomb Raider had a great interface for its time, but I thought Ultima 9 stumbled on its own interface, so I don't think U9 was arcade/TR like at all.
On topic:
I play the Tinker most of the time in UW2, but I don't have a preference in UW1.

It's not arcade. For example, you jump where your cursor is - so all the jumps that are annoying in TR and other games are practically reduced to zero.
I liked it.

To be fair, Ultima 8 DID have annoying jumping problems like in TR and other games before the patch. I played the original and the patched versions and both were great. I actually liked the pre-patched version as much as the final one.

Allright, everyone who's been here a while knew i'd get into this.
U9 was too arcade like, and not ultima enough, it had massive plot holes and contradicts every other Ultima! As a longtime ultima fan, I'll say U9 is imbalanced, and didn't very much play like earlier ultima's, which you should try, since someone found a working patch for U7.
Anyways, Underworld, I'm normally paladin or Ranger, and, no, Underworld isn't imbalanced, it's as close as perfectly balanced as character classes get.
Brad Schoonmaker on 30/8/2000 at 22:15
I agree with that. U9 was a bit off the Ultima saga. I liked the way it portrayed the dungeons in the way I'd like Underworld to be. I'm not faulting it. UW1 was a dungeon romp and it did a great job of it. I just enjoyed U9's version of exploring them a little better. I got lost plenty of times in the U9 ones, but with the automap in Underworld, I alway know where to go.

In Ultima Underworld (1&2), only "strong" classes suit me.
It's way too annoying not to be able to wear a good armor and carry most of the objects you need. And after a few mantra-lalala you can cast spells like a mage, while it's impossible to increase your strength.
So paladins, warriors and such classes are the most suitable in UW, imho.
