For the
longest fucking time (which is exactly 20 years and some change) I have wondered why one of the best pieces of video game music ever made wasn't being obsessively covered and rearranged by people across the planet. No, I'm not talking about the Katamari Damacy theme song, though that would also be an excellent question.
I'm talking about Wings from Xenogears. It's the most triumphant ode to air and flight ever written. Turns out, there's an easy answer why: because everyone was waiting for Mitsuda to get an orchestra and some stoner kids on guitars to make a version that can't ever be surpassed, to make it (
https://vimeo.com/360136584) a thing of soaring, exuberant, weep-for-joy
fulfillment during the game's 20th anniversary concert.
If you don't feel anything when things take off at 2:15 (segueing from previous track Flight into Wings for you Xeno-OST nerds, if you exist) I hope you've written your will, because you're probably just a cold, unfeeling corpse.

'Tis alright. I don't think I've ever been as excited as that guitarist, lol.

Well, as long as you feel it's all right in your soul, I'm okay with that. I like the guitarist dude, though the squalls of feedback from his overenthusiastically fingerbanging the fretboard are thankfully lower in the mix in the 5.1 BD version.

It's simply impossible not to listen to this at full volume, it's too good!
Also from games I personally played, Rayman 2, MediEvil/MediEvil 2 and Stunt GP had nice OSTs, though these are completely different styles, nowhere near as much bangers as this one

Like I was ever going to let this thread die. Here's someone ginger doing a gorgeous thing from Ori.

(yes, she did a Hollow Knight track as well. Find it for yourself!)

If I posted Megalovania, would that be a ban or just a warning?
You know what, screw self-restraint, here's TWO HOURS OF FOX.

(Toby Fox. Also, the name of a film I was almost in.)
(The Ori music was nice too.)

Undertale had a pretty good OST, so there's no need for restraint. Megalovania's great! Maybe I'll reach the portion of the game at some point where it plays, and then feel differently. Until that point I'll just file it along with the rest of themes in my battle music playlist.

So, since I made that last post, Undertale's soundtrack has moved up to 'music that reverberates within me to the core of my soul', or to just a little left of that. But not by much, I assure you. I won't bore you all with the link, but if you liked the soundtrack, the Fifth Anniversary concert is fucking magnificent.
So, what have I been listening to in the recent past? Well, Lena Raine has made some absolutely excellent shit, hasn't she? The Farwell DLC for Celeste is something I've had on my playlist for a while. It's filled with an incredible amount of release and catharsis if you're familiar with the game's themes (which you will be, if you've played Celeste at all.) She also made the soundtrack for Chicory, which is full of bangers, but also has some things that are slower, simpler, and more poignant:

There's also an excellent album from Darren Korb, featuring songs from Supergiant's stuff backed by the might of an entire orchestra at Abbey Road, and the Transistor songs are all amazing. The entire album is, really.

Lastly, an absolutely fiery performance of selections from Plague Tale: Requiem's OST, which is one of the year's best. I was afraid for the cellist's bowstrings as they snapped, but I'm in awe of the sheer raw intensity of the playing:

That Chicory track is great. I liked her Celeste soundtrack a lot. Should play Chicory at some point. And yeah Plague Tale 2 had some great music.
My fave videogame track from this year has got to be Raekwon & Ghostface Killah's Turtles tune:
