I find this trend really depressing. Most AAA games these days have background scores that blend into the game, rather than actual music tracks.

To my ears, there's no comparison between the two. Background music is just boring and uninspiring, and all blends together into an unmemorable mess. Actual music can be hit or miss, but when it's good it really draws you into the game and leaves a much stronger lasting impression.

I agree, but funnily enough, the Skyrim OST is the one that got the BAFTA nomination. Jeremy Soule does have quite a bit of talent, though. The Icewind Dale OST? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq5pT1pYrOY&list=PL0CFF7FD5BD804DD9&index=3) Pretty good. Must have been the academy's way of retroactively recognising his work.

+1 to all the Transistor links. Transistor had an exceptional soundtrack, and Paper Boats is one of my favourite closing themes to any game.

Malf: those TW3 tracks are ace. I really should get on with playing that game someday soon. Would the refrains be leitmotifs after a fashion, perhaps?

You should've thrown in Blood and Wine for extra flavor. It's the only game soundtrack I can think of that has the accordion front and center.

Half of the atmosphere in Borderlands is in its soundtrack. Even on its own it is fairly outstanding.

I was going to post something snarky here about Borderlands being as tasty as tumbleweed on a spit, but then I listened to that first track and... hmm. Wait. It's pretty good.

So I look up the composer, and of course it's Jesper Kyd. The man's only a genius after all.

Anyway, speaking of Borderlands, Tales from the Borderlands had some great tunes soundtracking each episode's intro. Here's all of them.

Actually, not all of Borderlands soundtrack is composed by Jesper Kyd, but his tracks are among the best, no doubt! :p I also don't really like the fighting music, which is half of all tracks.
