Get some Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paprika), Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2, Patlabor 1 & 2), Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit), Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo), Hideaki Anno (Evangelion, His and Her Circumstances), Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent, Texhnolyze, Ghost Hound, Kino's Journey, Gunslinger Girl and Elfen Lied in your diet. It'll be an eye opener.
But if you must watch a show for 13 year olds, I might suggest Code Geass. It has giant robots and blatant Lego block left wing politics jammed down your throat. Full Metal Alchemist is pretty awesome, good action, strong story and characters (also blatant commentaries on ethics jammed down your throat).
