The problem is: When playing Oblivion, everything works great and then it crashes. I get a Microsoft error report and the following in the event viewer:
Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 1.2.0.416, faulting module l3codecx.ax, version 1.5.0.50, fault address 0x000017fe.This happens quite randomly and at all sorts of different times (during combat, while sitting still, in the inventory, during load screens, with mods, without, etc). Sometimes I can only play for 5 minutes, sometimes it crashes at startup and sometimes I can play for an hour (hardly ever more than an hour though). Here are a few of the things I have tried to fix this.
* I have removed USB headphones that were thought to conflict
* updated video and audio drivers to most recent retail versions (as of today)
* uninstalled all codecs (only had 1, xvid)
* reregistered l3codecx.ax
* uinstalled Oblivion, removed Oblivion registry, reinstalled
* copied newer version of l3codecx.ax from another computer where Oblivion works and registered it on mine.
* disabled and/or uninstalled all anti-virus and anti-spyware
* Lowered harware acceleration in sound control panel one slider at a time until it was on troubleshooting mode.
* defragmented (grasping at straws)
* Tried codec packs from various sites (K-lite as recommended by this article (
http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?SCID=27&CIID=36222&p=4))
* Turned off HDR and Bloom (grasping at more straws)
* Killed all processes and apps accept the important ones.
* downloaded this codec reset app from this site (
http://nightmare2013.brashendeavors.net/))
I've chased the codec issue for most of today and all videos work on my system (mpeg, wmv, quicktime, iso rips via VLC, etc.) Several other games are installed and all work without issue. I don't overclock.
I don't think this breaks the surface, but I am running out of ideas.
I've searched the internet and spent literally 3 days troubleshooting this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
System specs:
Intel Dual Core 6600 (retail clock, heatsink and fan)
Asus MB
Asus Geforce 8800GTX
Audio Xfi Fatality
2GB RAM
250GB SATA 7200RPM 8MB cache system HD (50% free)
I have all DLC installed (from DVD) and Shivering Isles (all retail, no cracks).
Again, if you've read all this and have ideas, I would love to try them out. Thanks!
Yikes! no idea how it ended up in the wrong forum. any way to move it myself or does an admin have to do that? Sorry.

I'm not sure if l3codecx.ax is part of this, quite frankly, but I fixed a similar problem by downloading the Windows Media Player codecs from Microsoft's site. I had a hard time finding them, so if I track them down again I'll let you know.
Edit: The file I have is wmfdist-11.exe (Windows Media Format 11 runtime) which fixed my ES codec problems. If you don't have WMP11 there should, I'd hope, be a similar set of codecs for previous versions.
Edit 2: Searching a bit, I found someone fixed this problem by simply deleting l3codecx.ax. Seems sketchy, and I'm assuming media player's mp3 decoding would stop working, but worth a shot as long as you back it up.

Thanks for the tips, I will try both tonight.
Deleting the file does seem weird to me too, but I'd simply love to know what is causing the problem at this point.
The file I copied over from my wife's computer was 2 or 3 years newer than the version I had so I didn't think to try updating to MP11.
Thanks again.

Deleting the file seems to have fixed it. I have been able to play for over an hour twice.
After your post, I tried updating MP11 (I already had 11). I had version 11.0.5721.5145 and updated to 11.0.5721.5230. This did not fix the problem nor did it alter the version information of the codec file. I then installed the runtime files and that did not fix it nor did it alter any MP11 or the codec file information. So I deleted the file and now Oblivion seems stable.
I appreciate the help!

Sorry to ressurect old thread, jsut this was the top of google and I had exactly the same problem.
I found that if I deleted the l3codecx.ax file it stopped the game running but I fixed it by running Oblivion IV in compatibility mode for windows 98.
Just wanted to post another fix.
