... Snopes.com is one of the best sites to go to ...
I regularly use Snopes when replying to spam hyperbole emailed to me by the Internet/Computer illiterates on my mailing list. I just wasn't able to find the reference you did. Must not have looked hard enough I guess.
Hippos are a well known danger but somehow I think an alligator would be fast enough to get away and tough enough not to make an easy meal, especially as far gone as that one would have to be ...
It's a really neat pic but I would need first-hand, well documented evidence from someone I knew personally before I would even consider it possible to be anything other than photo-shopped. ;)
Of course, I have been known to be wrong before. I thought the owls in (

Hoot were puppets until I watched the extras on the DVD.

Actually, I didn't even go to Snopes, I just searched for "world's largest cat" in Google and the first website result was a page with the urban legend on it and a link to the Snopes article.
Although "world's largest cat" in Snopes provides the article, too.
Edit: while this doesn't conclusively prove the story, I found (
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1228242/Oops-werent-logs-The-moment-crocodile-killed-taking-foolish-shortcut-herd-hippos.html) an article with some more pictures of Croc vs. Hippos.

Though I don't know the photographer personally, he's well respected for his photos of nature and the croc vs hippos pics have been just recently released from an exclusive contract with the BBC.

Ah, in the original all I saw was the croc apparently comming out of the hippos mouth, I didn't see his tail off to one side. It was obvious in the larger picture of your article. My disbelief was due to the appearance of a hippo swallowing a croc tail first.

I missed that as well until I saw the article.
