To be honest, I paid minimal attention to the main story in FC3 so another mediocre story wouldn't stop me from getting FC4 (although I've heard that it develops more as the game goes on). Either way, I'm mainly interested in more outstanding sandbox gaming which they seem to have pulled off again so will definitely be getting this once I have cleared out a few more titles from my backlog.
Is hunting still in the game?

Yeah hunting is still in. Went on a hunting trip with my cousin last night in the co op mode. You can do it properly by gearing up with sniper rifles and bows and use bait to lure out carnivorous animals, or you can be more extravagant and go with a pickup-truck mounted machine gun, or a gyrocopter+grenadelauncher combo. It's fun, tho it doesn't make a whole lot of sense if you try to look at it with any kind of logic, e.g. you need to skin 4 rhinos to make a new wallet. :p
The gameplay certainly is great tho. The wingsuit was fun in FC3, but here it feels like they built the whole world to better accomodate it. It's all hills and valleys, so if you need to get lower down in the valley there's always a cliffside not too far away. Just jump off and soar down.

Still waiting for an official Blood Dragon 3 announcement.

Can someone tell Ubisoft that Far Cry 3, despite being more accessible, was disposable and forgettable compared to the flawed but way more interesting immersive sim of Far Cry 2, and that some of us would like a return to that idea, maybe just with the kinks ironed out, rather than just repeating Far Cry 3 again...

Is that a typo? I can't even find any mention of a Blood Dragon 2!

Blood Dragon 3: Vietnam War 2 was teased on April Fools Day (as the first game was, actually) but apparently Ubisoft has more recently confirmed that they have no plans for another Blood Dragon game. Boo.

I don't need a BD sequel, but I do hope that the inevitable DLC/spin off for FC4 is as inventive as Blood Dragon was. I like it when devs get creative with their DLCs, instead of just giving us more of the same.

Good luck with that.
Judging from the heavy re-use of assets, lack of any significant technical updates, and straight by straight rehash my guess is that Ubisoft's business strategists have adapted what's called a (
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/h/harvest-strategy.asp) "harvest strategy". If you don't feel like reading the link it means that they've decided the Far Cry brand is unlikely to grow if they put more energy into it, and feel that the best strategy is to treat is a cash cow and milk it for all the value it's got left.
Another good example in the gaming industry is Call of Duty. A minimal amount of effort is put into new games in the series, but they'll continue releasing new titles as long as people keep buying them.

What about the "immersive sim" part do you think FC2 did better? From where I'm standing, FC3 improved on FC2, gameplaywise, in all the right ways. I think what FC2 did better was the depressing atmosphere, and the bleak ending, but to be honest it's not like FC3 didn't
try to be bleak and depressing, it's just that Ubi's writers aren't really up to it. Also it kinda clashes with the gameplay I guess. How are you supposed to feel suicidal when you've got a wingsuit?
Tony, have you
played any of the CoDs? Last one I played was MW2, and it had a campaign that took you from one part of the world to the next with pretty much every single level. It starts off in some shanty town, then it's in Russia, then a brief interlude in space, then some suburbs in America. All with amazing production values. It's probably true that the gameplay doesn't change much from game to game, but to say that "minimal effort" goes into these games is just not true.

That's also what I always think when people bring up
Assassin's Creed as a milk cow for Ubisoft. There's a lot to criticise about those games, but there's a lot of work that goes into creating their worlds. They're filled to the brim with content. They're pretty damn far from minimalist rehashes along the lines of, say, EA's sports games (which aren't bad games, but there's little to justify a sale from one year to the next unless you're *really* into the latest league data).
