It probably would have helped if, of all the games they developed, more than one had been a hit.
Which one was the hit? Ultima Underworld? Return to Zork sold twice as many copies, if Wikipedia is to be believed. Origin even pulled the marketing due to how badly it was selling initially.

The GOTTA CATCH EM ALL thing worked in Far Cry 2 because of how varied the diamond locations were. Sometimes they were in locations that presented a story or a mystery, other times they were presented as a challenge. Then again, FC2 had more terrain variety in general and memorable locations despite being on what feels like a much smaller map.

The "no, really, Eidos closed us down even though we were making tons of cash for them" thing has never made any sense to me at all.
Should have been covered in your 100 econ/accounting classes. Ifyou pull 800k in cash bu have 400 in expenses and another 1k in liabilities you are still on the way to going bust.
There's a ton of similar examples of companiesthat pulled in lots of cash but still failed due to an inability to manage their liabilities

Kind of funny, I saw on the Steam stats page a few minutes ago that there were more people playing FC3 than FC4.

Matt and Pat play FC4 co-op but they don't have their mics but have to try to cooperate anyway. It's like that scene in Ghost Dog when Ghost Dog is hanging out with the French icecream vendor and they can't understand eachother but that's ok because who needs words when you've got the MAGIC OF FRIENDSHIP!

Varied locations with story material attached undoubtedly helped. I only played about a half hour of FC2, but weren't the diamonds also the main source of income for the player? In FC3, relics just unlock (but not outright purchase) a couple signature weapons and syringe recipes.
It would have helped if the relics weren't often found in ruins that amounted to just one or two antechambers in a cave. If the designers can't add some background to them, a la Skyrim/Fallout 3's side stories, maybe they can build out the "treasure hunt" areas more to make them blend with the environment organically and feel less gamey.

No, they're minor compared to the missions, but it can seem like that at first. The mission income ramps up steeply, the found diamonds do not.

I currently have a love/hate thing going on with FC 4. At times it's almost laughably easy, other times it's wicked hard. But I just bought an RPG, so all is right with my world now. Also madly in love with those 'buzzers'. Great way to get around.

That doesn't diminish their value though. Finding diamonds is key to survival during the first part of the game as doing so turns situations that would be impossible to survive with stock gear into ones that are manageable.
I need to try to play that game again. Does anyone know if there's anywhere I can download any gameplay fixes to make getting around less annoying?
