I'm actually kind of glad the Turks didn't make it to the World Cup. Their fans are an absolute nightmare for intimidating the opposition, camping outside their hotel, that kind of thing. I remember Man United got it pretty bad as well when they played Champions League matches in Turkey.

The captain looks exactly like my brother though :(

Given the amount of turkish immigrants in Germany, had Turkey qualified and they would have massive support during the World Cup. I'm also glad that they didn't qualify, since I also don't have much sympathy for their fans. Somehow I can imagine that a Germany vs. Turkey game during the World Cup could easily degenerate into a security nightmare.

Meanwhile, back in the TTLG League...
It's the turn of the year, the traditional halfway marker - time to check out who's up, who's down and who's hoping for cup glory instead? (alas, there is no fantasy cup competition, sorry fellow mid-table lurkers)
I hope everyone noticed my fantastic 79 point week during the festive period. Kuqi, Baros and Defoe all scoring on the same day is never going to happen again, so I have to draw attention to it.
Excitingly, there's almost a two-horse race developing at the top of the league. In the sense that Parmesan Belgrade have woken up sufficiently to be within a respectable distance of our runaway leaders Strontium Dogma.
At the sharp end, it appears to be a bleak Christmas for Cure City who remain stranded in Sunderlandesque fashion at the root of the table.
Anyone from 3rd (Portreath Wreckers) to 7th (Brian Licks Things) is probably in with a shout of a European Cup placing. Just like the Premiership, really.
Everyone else, keep dreaming of that cup run or an improbable climb back through the rankings. Or maybe consider creating a 'themed' team, where everyone is named after household objects. Or something.

Well, 150 points is a big gap, so I'm not expecting to fight for the top spot, even though there's still a full half season left to play (unlike what other teams in the Premiership seem to think regarding Chelsea). But I still think it's not impossible to finish as high as 2nd. Let's see what happens today. It's always good when Chelsea doesn't concede goals. And the regular Henry brace also helps.
What is the criteria for awarding bonus points to players? I've just noticed that Lampard was awarded a bonus point last gameweek, but I don't know why.

Yes, that seems to explain it. Thanks :)

Got to love Sven's tactical friendly planning...that could be a shrewd move, unless it turns out that not all teams whose names end in -guay play the same way.

So it's a bold new dawn for England, Mr Potato Head is in an oxygen tent and Chelsea have won the league. Again.
With one week left, the TTLG Memorial League seems unlikely to change a great deal. Therefore, it's time for some awards!
The "All over by Christmas" trophy and TTLG League title goes to Strontium Dogma who have basically sat at the top of the league all year and never seriously looked like moving. Congrats!
Parmesan Belgrade gave a good account of themselves, but except for a brief January burst couldn't bridge the gap to the summit. Obvious candidates for a Champions League place and a swimming pool full of tv revenue.
Settling on a UEFA Cup entrance are Citadel Benfica, Portreath Wreckers and Cats in Hell AFC, who can all look forward to exciting away-trips to former Eastern Bloc nations in the coming months.
AFC Industrial Vole, Brian Licks Things, Disguised in Black and Useless Utd can fight amongst themselves for the "Aston Villa award for consistently stunning mediocrity". Sack the board!
It's squeaky bum time for N'Al Raiders, HaveNotGotAHope AFC and M-DDU FC who will still be hoping to gather enough points to avoid relegation to TTLG Division 2 (featuring terrifying fixtures with Religious Debate City, Abortion Athletic and Image Macro Town).
Cure City are Sunderland. How Iggles has kept his job is something of a mystery. Rumours suggest he hasn't even visited the stadium for the past few weeks.
D'Arcy on 5/5/2006 at 15:34
The top and bottom places were decided very early in the season. Iggles made that rock bottom place his own, and never looked like wanting to leave it :cheeky:
