I finally finished Mafia and installed Fallout 3 (the GOTY version). However, the game won't start - I get the launcher, but when I click on "Play", all I get is a black screen, from which I have to reset the computer. (When I try to Ctrl-Alt-Del out of it, I can see a mouse pointer, but I still can't end the programme.)
Has anyone else here run into this problem? I've checked out a number of forums, and it seems to be a relatively frequent problem, but I haven't seen a solution that works consistently. I tried the ffdshow trick, I tried getting rid of GfWL, I tried renaming the binks. I installed a new video card driver (Geforce 260). No change.
I'll probably do a complete reinstall of the game, but I'm not optimistic that this will help. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Getting rid of GFWL is only going to make things worse, what with the game requiring it and all.
When I had the black screen problem it was my install of GFWL having become broken somehow - try uninstalling it, downloading the (

Might need to reinstall Fallout in the process; I can't quite remember what exactly I did to fix it, but after faffing with un- and reinstalling GFW and Fallout in some order it worked again. ;)

I'll try that, thanks.

Don't know if it's related, but I had a problem with Fallout 3 where it would run extremely slowly and stutter. I seem to recall I removed the FFDShow audio/video codec package as it was interfering somehow.

The reinstall worked. Thanks again to TheOutrider!
Now to bring the game to the breaking point with a selection of mods! :p
