Heaven forbid that a followup should be expect to maintain the same feel/soul of its predecessors.
I'm still not getting why people are so adamant in thinking this is the case, but meh. Edit: by which I mean the sentiment that FO3 does not have the feel / soul of the predecessors, not the general statement I quoted which is in itself generally correct.

I myself can't comment one way or another since I haven't played Fallout 3; but from what I've seen, I can believe that some people may feel that way.

What The_Raven said... I have no idea what a NMA goon is but I trust I would be baffled at dethtoll's witiness if I did. and congrats to him for being hostile or at least foaming at the mouth in frustration in every other post on TTLG.
I don't think KOTOR is similar when in combat or exploring the wasteland, but when in towns. I won't make a huge case for this but the game does for me have a Star Wars vibe sometimes.

NMA is shorthand for 'No Mutants Allowed', a Fallout fansite that has, rightly or wrongly, developed a reputation for being ... puritanical, shall we say, when it comes to the question of what 'true' Fallout is all about.

FO3 reminds me a lot more of a Bethesdian Deus Ex than anything Bioware has done, tbh.

That's always going to be a subjective thing, as what makes Fallout varies between people.
Personally, it gave me the feeling I would get if I bought a 'Ferrari', but found the 'Ferrari' was manufactured and designed by, say, Hyundai. The 'Ferrari' is not necessarily bad,
per se, but it is obvious that it was designed by a bunch of Korean engineers and made by a bunch of Korean workers working from a bunch of bullet points defining what makes up a 'Ferrari', and some essential coherence of vision was lost along the way. And that back bumper looks like it came off a Sonata, and they obviously retrofitted the bonnet from a Terios and the door handles came off a {insert Hyundai model here} and all the prancing horse logos and flashy air intakes and bright red paint can't quite hide the fact that it's Korean, not Italian, and has switched to a diesel engine and...
In essence, I found just about everything about it to be 'off' just that little bit, its biggest failing wrt 'fallout' was a lack of verisimilitude and coherency.
Despite the reference to switching to diesel I'm not of the opinion that gameplay time system or a specific perspective are essential factors for a fallout game

^you seem to be very knowledgeable about RPGs, I'm curious as to which ones you like
Zygoptera on 13/12/2008 at 02:30
Hmm.
Problem is that I actually end up liking pretty much every game I buy, I didn't so much dislike Oblivion as found it disappointing, for example. The RPGs of the past ten(ish) years I'd rate highest would be Planescape Torment, Fallout 2, Vtm: Bloodlines, NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer with honourable mentions to the two Gothics (2,3) I've played (planning to get G1 and Arx Fatalis RSN), Wizardry VIII, BG2, IWD1, both KOTORs, Fallout 1 and excluding a couple of hydrid or marginal types (SS2, King's Bounty: TL, Outcast, JA2). I wouldn't necessarily recommend all the titles I liked though, that would depend on the tastes of who was asking.
ie pretty much 'traditional' RPGs rather than current 'lite' types.
