I have a very weird relationship with Fallout 3. It's kinda similar to what I had with Disciples 2 - when I'm not playing it, I don't want to play it, but when I eventually get bored enough and start it up I'm hooked. In F3's case, I think it's related to this open world and the concepts of goal and motivation. When I jump into the game, for the first minute or so I'm completely and utterly bored, as I go through my Data section on the Pipboy, trying to decide on a task. With little incentive to pick one or the other, as the game's rewards are not particularly exciting, this takes a while. But once I've decided on something to do, things get well under way and after a short bit I discover that I'm enjoying myself immensely. With Fallout 3 I enjoy the ride the most, rather than what's waiting at the end. I look back at games like KOTOR 2, fielding a gameplay that I considered tedious and broken, and that only made me play it for its storyline and character progression. This time it's the other way around. I'm not far along the main quest because, so far, it's failed to draw me in. When I level up, I get mixed feelings: on the one hand, I'm
kinda happy I get to up my stats, on the other, I'm annoyed I have to do it. But getting there, to either character advancement or plot points, is great fun.

As for me, the main problem of Beth's games is that they're kind of boring/quite tedious, and not dramatic enough - they don't evoke feelings. FO3 is better in that regard, but still not quite there.
I agree with this, it's a big improvement over Oblivion, but it's still severely lacking in this department. As I said, I enjoy the ride. The rewards leave me quite unimpressed.

I must say that walking through Oblivion (especially with the Unique Landscape mods and some good weather mods) does evoke feelings in me. In some ways I found it, at the best of times, an immensely immersive and beautiful hiking simulator. It's when it comes to talking to people that the immersion breaks down, but the world itself is often gorgeous.
Indeed, I enjoyed it for the landscapes and woods... since I have so little opportunity to visit real ones. :(
Somebody should make a mod which should remove all fantastic monsters, remove all stupid trivial quests and all and radically modify it into some kind of medieval hunting mushroom/herb collection simulator.

I thought that was what Morrowind was...*ba-dum-tish*

never played KOTOR 2, but F3 is remarkably similar in feel to KOTOR, except when you're wandering the wastelands... Hell, F3 probably could have been called KOTOR 3. I'm having a lot of fun with F3 but it's unworthy of being called a Fallout game, not because it's a bad game but because it doesn't even remotely feel like the old games (I'm not that convinced it's trying to; it feels like a different game world with a bunch of Fallout cameo appearances). I do like it though.

Please god let this be over.
You are one dedicated player! I am now torn between FO3 and GTA4 and I switched between this two games. Yet, I know, deep down, I should just concentrate on one in order to maximize the experience. The world of FO3 is constructed in a beautiful and believable setting.. but after spending some time, I find it really barren and boring and that it's just a empty but beautiful level. I kept on thinking that I need to get back to a world full of lives and activities like GTA4.

Given that 12 years have passed between Fallout 1 and Fallout 3 this shouldn't come as a suprise to anyone who isn't a gibbering NMA goon.

Now thats a game I`d make a level / quest for. Be interesting to see how hard it is to make levels for Fallout 3 incomparison to how it was for System Shock 2.

If my experience with the various TES editors is anything to go by, significantly easier.

I'm sure you meant to convey something else, like about NPCs or what have you, but as read that sounds like something that is 100% on point. That is, a post-apocalyptic wasteland OUGHT to feel barren and empty compared to New York City. The whole point is that it's a world full of many less lives.
