Well, I was just hopping around Vivec (Literally. Acrobatics doesn't raise itself!), when all of a sudden, I FELL THROUGH THE FLOOR, and into some gray-like mystery land. Looking up, I could see the world falling away from me. It was not unlike that last boxing match in Snatch, when Brad Pitt gets knocked silly. And then... It all faded away, and I was back on solid ground just inside the door when it faded in!
Thanks to Bethesda for that safety measure, but that was freaky!

there are 3 things that happen when I fall in teh void...
a) I fall through the ground, and DIE.
b) I fall, then land on solid ground where I was a few seconds ago
c) I fall, then I sit there. In the void. This has happened once in the daedric shrine near Tel Vos

If you fall through, immediately hit right mouse button to pause game, bring up console and type fixme. That should save you.

I've had the same thing happen, both in the cantons (vivec and that pilgrim town near tel branora) and in ebonheart.
Then I changed the threadload option in morrowind.ini and I haven't had it happen since then from jumping. (standing on irregular objects still sometimes causes "void teleportation" though)
in morrowind.ini change the line:
dontthreadload=0
to
dontthreadload=1
