Yeah Fallen Aces probably should have it's own thread eh? I think the consensus here is we think this thing is... pretty neat?

I was kinda lukewarm on Episode 1 but nonetheless found myself thinking about it and wanting to replay it in the 2 years since it came out, so when Ep 2 just dropped I replayed the first Ep and am now halfway through Ep2.
It's an interesting game. The artstyle looks fantastic most of the time but at times also feels awkward. The mixture of 2D sprites and 3D models blend uneasily at times when it feels like the devs didn't quite know where to draw the line between which bits of furniture and scenery props should be 2D and 3D. And being a game with plenty of verticality you'll often look down and see the goons below reduced to a thin line. The gameplay is good though, with both stealth and combat situations being quite readable and generally working as you'd want. The level design is also good with the mansion-infiltration in Ep1 being a particular high point. Feels very Thiefy. Ep2 introduces vehicles and the standout mission so far has been a homage to Half Life 2's Highway 17. A countryside drive with frequent stops at various goon-filled roadside attractions.
With all this good stuff, I think the biggest part of why neither Ep1 or 2 have really
grabbed me is, sadly, the story. A stunning amount of production value has gone into the cutscenes and voice overs and it's a shame its all in service of a story that's so... muddled. Several hours in, the tangled web of the central murder mystery has me much more confused than intrigued.
Anyway, I'm enjoying it. Will keep playing. Curious to hear what other TTLGers think of Fallen Aces.

Ok, finished Ep 2. The story does get more focused in the final chapter and leaves you with a cliffhanger for the finale in Ep 3. Looking forward to it!

I only played the demo waaaay back and it also didn't grab me. The 2D + 3D style looks impressive in screens or vids but, as you pointed out, ends up feeling kinda awkward when actually played?
The bigger problem is that I'm just not into the whole noir decetive genre, so the story or aesthetic just don't personally appeal to me :/

Um, didn't you literally make a noir detective game? XD
I had a good time with Fallen Aces because the gameplay was sneaking in open-ended levels, and the level design was respectably good for that. There's a reason I keep playing FMs; I like this kind of gameplay. And the aesthetic & story were good enough. I could appreciate that they were going for style & they kept it kind of campy.
