I kind of love/hate that idea. On one hand, it would be intriguig to see which posts people find valuable and which are meh, but it would invariably lead to "I got better ratings than you so stfu" rankism.
I agree that this can happen, but in practice I haven't seen it happen with any regularity, and I do think most people here (or at least the people whose opinions I value) have a healthy bullshit detector. Anyone who appeals to "I got more likes than you" immediately takes a dive in my opinion. On the other hand, I'd like to have a way to show that I like a post - which, more often than not, isn't even about agreeing with an opinion so much as showing appreciation for a nice, well-worded bit of wit or irony, or just the sheer joy that counteracts the bitter, jaded cynicism that sometimes crops up. Sure, I can always post something along the lines of "Nicely put, <random poster xy>!", but IMO that doesn't make for good threads, so I prefer the more low-key "Agree", "Awesome" or "WTF?!" button.

Liking seems to be a lazy way to respond to something when you can't be arsed to say anything.
I think I've deleted my Facebook account 3 times now. I've got one active at the moment but ignore it most of the time. For me it's dangerous when you have lots of people you vaguely know who look like their lives are far more interesting. You can get a very distorted view of things from FB and what people choose to share. It's a trap I can easily fall into and want to avoid.

It's not about not being arsed to say anything. A discussion that's constantly interrupted by comments along the lines of "Nice one!" or "Yup, I agree" is a conversation that loses all flow. In actual, face-to-face conversation, those things overlap with the more substantial conversational turns, they're not foregrounded. A message board thread doesn't have this built-in prioritisation of posts: conversation is flattened out by lacking various features that spoken conversation has.

I understand. It's probably me just wanting someone to elaborate rather than collecting "like points". Still, the like doesn't stop anyone saying "awesome!" or "yay!" or "fuck you"...

Absolutely. Sometimes elaboration is called for, sometimes it's fun. And sometimes I just like to say "Yup." Right now I just think it and hope the people I'm yupping'll sense it somehow. ;)

Wait... oh no!
Does this mean the High Priest will no longer be bestowing his likeness upon every single post???
Sad day, very sad, sad day.
:p
But yeah, steer clear of FB, unless you want to be able to chat with everyone you know from your computer.

I'm a guy in my early 20s who used to have Facebook(who's apparently within the popular age groups who use it). And honestly, I'm still glad that I deleted my account on there months ago. It didn't take long to adjust, but it was a massive waste of time in retrospect(which I only really made initially to keep in touch with fellow members of a fan game project, that never really went anywhere in the end.) Sure, several old friends from my earlier school years managed to find my account over time and contact me again for the first time in years. But even then, I moved myself to Skype(and found ways to keep in contact with those individuals from there.)
So I personally wouldn't bother making an account, SlyFoxx. Just stick to what forms of communication suit you best and don't have people try to make you think otherwise:thumb:

Did I?
No, not really. Now stop editing other people's posts without their consent.

Stop frittering your life away on TTLG Renzatic: there are better ways to stay in touch with people.

I do have a positive thing to say about FB. It is a way to reconnect with people that have fallen off the face of the Earth. I've reconnected with people I have not seen in 37 years and some have become actual friends again that my wife and I now see in person. One lady is someone I knew my wife would hit it off with immediately. They became real friends in one evening. If not for FB, I would not have contacted this lady ever again and my wife would not have a new buddy in real life.
Yes, there are some pretty negative, or at least bothersome things about FB, but there are some good things too. I just wish that the content they display is not based upon whom you have liked and commented on (and vice-versa) over the past days. I can see almost all content from me 100+ friends, but I have to dig. Mostly I get news feeds from only 10 or so.
