Do you really think that was the reason for the relative success of each campaign?
A reason, certainly. If you're appealing to a sort of festive rebelliousness, it helps to have an ostensibly rebellious record!

Fuck me, you won't do what I tell you.
The best part of this story is that no matter who won, Sony made out like crazy.

As for Rage, I think they're easy to underestimate due to the fact that lesser bands went on to co-opt their sound and substitute rage against the ex-girfriend. Still, it's difficult to put into words how fresh and massive their sound was in 1993 when Gin Blossoms ranked as "Alternative" and Kurt was already arranging his barrels according to flavor.
This.

So instead of simon cowell telling you whos going to be number one, someone else did it instead, proved that lambs will follow a wolf to a slaughtering, reguardless of the wolf.

Oh god - is this song STILL extant? And is easily the WORST one RATM songs by far.
Anyone born after 75' commenting on RATM may as well comment on Woodstock, and the French Revolution - you weren't there, and you don't know, and you just sound stupid to people who were (who no doubt sound just as stupid to you) .
It WAS a movement - FACT.
Unfortunately, it was a movement from "sheer unfettered capitalism" to "rebellious capitilism"
To paraphrase :"Fuck you, I won't buy what you sell me."
Or, to use other words: "I'll buy this OTHER stuff that makes me feel like I'm making a difference, but doesn't actually change anything apart from giving money to Coca-Cola or Adidas through a THIRD PARTY instead..."
THERE, I SAID IT.
I should point out that RATM will have a COMPLETELY different cultural relevance to certain people, who would have found it nice to see someone telling the truth (which wouldn't have been found in a book, and Wiki wasn't around yet). For some - RATM was the only source of proof that 'something really isn't right here'. If you're one (like me), then you'll know what I mean. If not you'll think I'm a tool...
Don't get me started on Tool... ;)

Tool are too good to be that popular. Just not good enough for me to listen to on a regular basis.
ercles on 26/12/2009 at 03:44
I don't really listen to Tool much anymore because my tastes have lead me elsewhere, but sometimes I'll get a craving and just crank Third Eye. Carey's drum tracks from pretty much all of Aenima and a lot of Lateralus are worth regular visits alone.
