So, how long until the internet rickrolls the singles chart?
That was the original intention of the people who started the campaign; they tried to get Rick Astley to number 1 last year.

What was amazing is I just saw someone on This Morning celebrating the triumph of democracy in getting RATM to number 1.... the top 40 is by its nature democratic, it's just a measure of what people buy.
Also RATM might be donating their income from this to Shelter but I imagine that the larger cut that Sony get won't go anywhere.
Still, as for Joe McElderry, he was on a musical theatre course and that's probably where he will/wants to end up, so despite not getting a number 1 he's not done badly getting his name out there.
But yeah, hopefully no one was seriously under the illusion that they were protesting anything meaningful.

This is heartening I think. The public reject the project when presented with some sub-ironic shit but embrace it when the song is about racist police brutality :D

Giving a shit about "Don't Stop Believin'" is so 2005, well before it turned into an anthem for meatheads hooking up at bartime.
As for Rage, I think they're easy to underestimate due to the fact that lesser bands went on to co-opt their sound and substitute rage against the ex-girfriend. Still, it's difficult to put into words how fresh and massive their sound was in 1993 when Gin Blossoms ranked as "Alternative" and Kurt was already arranging his barrels according to flavor.

As much as this is a meathead song, its use in the final sequence of The Sopranos means it always gets to me.

Do you really think that was the reason for the relative success of each campaign?
