This is great. I would have sworn it was some Anonymous prank, but then it would have been a Rickroll I guess (and not involved any real money or something). Which wouldn't improve the quality of the tune on top any.
This could be interesting in the long run. How many people complain the kids have no taste, got no history and don't know just how derivative and hackneyed most pop/rock is. Every now end then people organise to put, I dunno, Janice Joplin on top for a while to spice things up.

I believe dethtoll was referring to the millions of dollars made from the selling of their other CDs (CD's?) and singles.

Shit song
Seriously....if they're going to do this with RATM, couldn't they have chosen ANY other song?
Briareos H on 21/12/2009 at 06:55
Frankly I'm not sure that RATM is the problem. Larger scale hypocrisy in artists is something we accept, given that they invest a sufficient part (cocaine, whores and alcohol exempted) of their revenue in other for-the-greater-good activities.
The problem is that people who give a care about single charts don't even fucking deserve to be mentioned, let alone create a thread about them. Why do you all feel the need to bitch against X-Factor or RATM? Would Mother Theresa topping charts be acceptable?
We shouldn't even have the discussion in the first place. If you haven't grown out of picking the results of nation-wide popularity charts as source for musical advice, you don't get to blame their poor quality.
Mass action can change popular vote, whoop dee doo.

The day one of us doesnt feel the need to bitch about X-Factor is the day ttlg dies...

Thing is, top 40 is top 40. The general itunes or cd buying citizen makes purchases of albums based on personal reasons that cannot be averaged in any accurate number at all. x percent buy it because their best friend likes it, or they're trying to impress someone with a certain song or album. Other x percent buy it because they're die-hard fans.
Another portion might just want it to fill their 'party mix' with new or unheard stuff. And then there's the few idiots that just like it and think it's somehow good. It also has a lot to do with what is being pushed at teh time. If television and radio stations are filled up with shit, people will pay for shit. That's why the worlds musical choice and volume of popularity is slowly, yet so quickly turning into... shit. Which it always has been. In the 80's and 90's you had the kind of shit that would fill up late night sitcoms and will smith-like shows. Beat boxes and synth horns with synth-slap bass riffs were one example of what I consider to be shitty as current pop.
In the 30's and 40's it was blues and folk that people were adapting to as the new sound, which at the time was as close to Rhiana as one would come, only Rhiana would be re-enacted by a cute white actress because people weren't used to the alternative, and if people can't adjust to it, it won't sell. Which is where extremely pressurful marketing to young teenage girls comes into play, making pretty much any shit wrapped set of notes and sound effects into a top 40 shit.
If someone could please read this and tell me what my 'point' is, I would appreciate it.

X-Factor produces a big bag of instantly forgettable, generic pap every year that has been right at the top of the charts in the UK for the past four years or so. It's a big steaming turd of a situation.
No surprise that Rage is far too much of a faux pas for the cool hipsters at ttlg, but that's totally irrelevant. This is an awesome turnaround for the books, and I'm proud to say I bought my copy even though I have the album.
Killing in the Name is a bit of a weird choice since iirc it's about the KKK and police corruption, but yeah, it's like, mostly for (

Anyone got a link to the official chart sales figures now it's all over? Haven't got time to dig one up at the moment.
