While searching bluesnews.com I found this interesting story - sounds like Eidos may push ION to make a PS2 version although the article clearly states that this has not been officially confirmed by ION. If Eidos pushes them to do it - it better not cut into Thief 3 development resources is all I gotta say! :grr:

April 18, 2003 - The British Official PlayStation Magazine is confirming that developer Ion Storm is hard at work on an PS2-exclusive game that will be set in the Deus Ex universe. This is contrary to loose rumors that DX2: Invisible War, the sequel to Deus Ex, was making its way to PS2.
Is there any truth to this? While there are no hard facts, the prospect is not that unlikely. IGN has learned that Ion Storm is scratching its head over how to bring the enormous, texture-heavy PC and Xbox game to the PS2, and would rather not do so, given the significant difference in system architecture.
But Eidos, seeing the huge PS2 market at its fingertips and the massive popularity of Deus Ex, is working to get the team to bring the next Deus Ex, in whatever form, to PlayStation 2. It almost makes more sense to bring a different game altogether than to try and port DX2: Invisible War.
We have yet to hear an official word from Eidos regarding the game, but check back with IGN for more news regarding this game as it happens.

*shrugs*
Well, I wouldn't mind it too much. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, the more poeple who play Deus Ex the better. Furthermore, I highly doubt this is going to encroach on T3's resources at all, seeing as how the logical thing to do would be to get members of the DX team on it. And finally, I doubt it will be all THAT exclusive. I'm sure they'd like to make some heavy changes if they did the game, but it would be crazy to literally start completely from scratch.

Totally agree. Even though practically all transitions with different platforms have gone from bad to worse, regarding DX it can be done succesfully, I believe. I mean, MOHAA and MoH Frontline are basically the 'same' game, but in fact they did better job with Frontline than with allied Assault, so why not DX too. Also as far I'm concerned, they better not line T3 delay DX2 in any ways:cheeky: Sure, I'm gonna buy both but DX2 will easily top my most-wanted-game-of-the-year list.

Sorry about that guys, but I probably should have used another smilie there - :cheeky:
I was just sacastically joking about cutting into the T3 resources and I'm fairly sure it's 2 different camps within ION doing both Thief 3 and DX 2. And I'm eagerly awaiting DX2 as well - it's gonna look fantastic IMO just from the screens we've seen. :thumb:
It's just amazing how things are changing within the gaming biz - like (

Quote:
In the meantime, there's business to attend to. The graphics advances Carmack is pioneering with Doom III are already attracting attention from the software developers who license id's code. Carmack's engines are the gold standard of the industry; the engine for Quake III fetches a $250,000 flat fee plus a royalty from the licenser. License deals now account for 20 percent of id's revenue, according to CEO Todd Hollenshead. That means game sales still bring in most of the money - but competition there is growing. In the past three years, shooters like Halo and Unreal Tournament have eaten into Quake III Arena's market share.
But id could pocket some cash from Microsoft. Redmond keeps calling, trying to convince the company to release a version of Doom III for the Xbox: "We're being offered a pretty significant amount of money to sit on it until an Xbox port is done," says Carmack. id hasn't announced a decision yet.and PS2 approaching EIDOS to get a PS2 only port of Deus Ex as well......

Heh, no problem, mate! But you've a point there: I think it's actually quite odd that even in Thief and DX communities people tend to become very opinionated and obsessive about their favourites. At least I find it bordeline ridiculous- you've TWO great franchises from the same company so why the hell argue? Go figure. Or, if you want to look it at that way, the fans in times being quite fanatic also manifests the fact that the designers have succeeded in putting out great stuff. But of course, there's a limit= life outside games;)
As for that excerpt, it sure does look like some heavy weights are being thrown around. I dunno if that's a good thing in the end. Too many compromises will be have to made to all platforms, thus downgrading the games all the way:mad: Personally, I couldn't care less if all the consoles were withdrawn from thre market, being totally a PC player and considering consoles more like toys than true gaming platforms. But, different strokes for different folks, eh?
But yes; we're living exciting times: platform 'wars', DX2, T3, Hidden & Dangerous 2, Jedi Academy, Knights of the Old Republic etc.:D :cheeky: Life has a purpose!

argh, i hope not.
controllers will NEVER beat mouselook.
tomi1kenobi on 20/4/2003 at 23:45
I hear that:)
pdenton on 21/4/2003 at 03:06
did you guys play DX on PS2?
Oh man did it suck! the controls were awful, the sound seemed downgraded, and the interface.....:eww:
tomi1kenobi on 21/4/2003 at 09:02
Well, I've bever played it, trying to stay tsear clear of consoles as much as possible. What was it like, storywise? The same stuff but on another platform? I dunno, managing your inventory through a controller seems pretty difficult.

i borrowed a friend's PS2 and rented it and thought it was just as good as the PC version. It had the same feel and style, and the controlling was good for a console first person shooter. The aiming isn't quite as easy as with mouse but Deus Ex is more about planned and quickly executed attacks and not so much diving into the middle of the action and turning the place into a graveyard. I'd imagine a game like Serious Sam, with hundreds of enemies would be considerably harder on console with a gamepad. The main thing that was different on the PS2 version was the size of the levels, they were broken into smaller bights and some areas were not quite as expansive but it still had everything and left me with the same feeling of the PC version.
If they do make a game, it might be hard to get the team as excited since PS2 isn't as capable in the graphics and audio departments. Maybe there could be a prequel to Deus Ex 1 that goes into more detail about J.C. and Paul Denton's past and the enhancements and political tension behind them.
