That's the bottom line for me - how it will affect my play. Well if it is how we understand it: it will be made hellishly easier. You should never have a moment where you have to think what your character would do in a given situation because you will always be able to take the most basic character trait.
Simply put your character will never be in a fish out of water situation, and the realism of that part of the game will go away. You're character will be served exactly what they want in terms of ammo and the gameplay will be like if you had cheats enabled and repeatedly typed in "allammo"
Of course the rest of the game should be so good you won't really notice this.
To me it seems that if you want everyone to have the exact type of ammo that they want whenever they have ammo you might as well have the cheats on by default.

as far as i can figure this "one size fits all" ammo, they won't screw it up, hopefully.
it's probably going to be like
tranq dart = 3 ammo units
pistol shot = 5 ammo units
sniper shot = 15 ammo units
gep gun shot =50 ammo units
that'd make a whole lot of sense, and makes for easier balance. i hope there's a bigger limitation on ammo also, just didn't make sense to carry 20 gep rockets in my pocket..

"Those of you that played Deus Ex will notice that the skill system has been scrapped this time around. It's just assumed that you've been trained in all weapons types. The hope was that this would allow players to be able to take more paths easier without being pigeonholed in a certain role for the entire game. In fact, experience has been removed all together. So now it's just you against the world, with only your brain and biomods to keep you company."
Okay, so this pisses me off, but in light of that, I'd like to say that if they're going to take that element of customization out of the game, then there SHOULD be generic ammunition to make up for it.
Why? Because this is the only thing that allows for weapon selection to make a roleplaying mark with your character. If weapon skill made a difference, then there would be a substantial reason to search for the ammo for your preferred weapon. Otherwise you might as well play DOOM. But if ammo were generic, then you would at least have the option of roleplaying your specific weapon set.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't really like the skill set of the last game; for instance, I hated the assault rifle but loved the shotgun and sniper rifle. I wanted to
train in just those, but I ended up having to resort to using the assault rifle from time to time due to ammo shortage. That and that the skill sets were a bit unbalanced. So I'll have to wait to see how I like it in this game, not prejudge until we see how it's implemented...
