Eidos Montreal has ~500 employees. Looking Glass had 80 or fewer. (Also keep in mind that LGS released between 1 and 3 games per year) The scale and scope of making a game is incredibly different now. You really seem to not understand this. Assuming TDP had never been made before, and Thief were going to be functionally identical to it, but with modern AAA graphics, it would be a massively hideous failure in today's market. Please understand and accept this, as it is the truth. There are not enough competent "hardcore" fans to purchase that game for what it would cost to make from scratch with modern tech. Games cost less for the consumer now and cost more for the developer/publisher.
I don't think so. If LGS were still around to make Thief today, with the only differences being graphic quality and a few other bits and pieces related to control, I think it'd still find its niche. It would take a bunch more people to make it, though.

Why is it that video games is the one thing that no one takes pride in its roots and history.
Are you kidding me? Most of the people making videogames today grew up playing those titles you get all starry eyed over. No one's forgotten their roots. In fact, those roots are pretty evident in just about every game made today. It's just these people aren't slavishly devoted to the past, and are trying to build upon what came before to do their own thing.
Hell, I could make an argument that games haven't changed as much as they should have in the last 20 years, given the technology available these days.

You make mock of the people who made it possible for you to be typing at a video game forum.
This is where I don't think you get it. No one is mocking people like Richard Garriott or any of the RPGs you're always mentioning. They're mocking you because you're so overly obsessed with talking about it. All the time.
And to fully appreciate any kind of art or entertainment, you don't only need to respect it's origins, but you also need to adapt and appreciate how that medium has evolved over time. You seem to be severely lacking on the second part.

Nobody's mocking Richard Garriot, but I'll be happy to -- he's a friggin' hack and nobody should take him seriously.

I dont think you understand that I have been following Garriotts career since the beginning. You people obviously dont know much. First he started the whole successful computer gaming industry, then he created mmo, and to this day has been breaking ground and moving forward. It just so happens that he has shifted back to his own roots for his next project. What is wrong with you people?!

Your problem, Moon, is that you're like the guy who loved silent films back when you were a kid, and now you're bitching about how these color talkie movies just don't have the same magic, and these recent directors obviously have no respect for what came before.
METROPOLIS WAS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE, AND EVERYTHING THAT'S COME SINCE IS ABSOLUTE TRASH! FRITZ LANG WAS A VISIONARY! THIS ORSON WELLES HACK IS JUST A SELLOUT MAKING DUMB MOVIES FOR STUPID PEOPLE! APOCALYPSE NOW? LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER STUPID WAR MOVIE TO ME! :joke:

See, your world is so limited. I wasn't talking about what Garriott has done recently - truth be told he hasn't done anything really significant in the industry for over a decade now. I was talking about what others have accomplished using the ideas and concepts that guys like Garriott implemented years ago.
There's nothing wrong with "us people." We've moved on and adapted, and you haven't.

Well, if it's not the best, at least it's one of the best. :p

I would never suggest that my paltry lack of "advancing" as a gamer post 2004 could be a thorn in the side of a complete stranger, but something is detrimentally wrong here. Im not saying that some of you are nutjobs, but after being told repeatedly that a person is "in character" while on a message forum, because that is how it used to be done, to then continue to ignorantly treat that person as if he was a *real* raving and drooling psycho, again, speaks volumes about you, not me.
