I don't like the word heist. I have no idea why I don't like it really except it feels rather modern. Apparently, looking at my OED, it's originally US and mid 19th century. Whatever it is, it makes me cringe when I see it. That's all.
When I think of stealing and how it relates to the Thief series, I think of *one* man doing the job. One man, who walks alone. When I hear the word heist, I think of more than one man doing the job, as a heist usually nets some obnoxiously huge payload that requires a team to pull off.

As in the Italian Job - original of course! Though the remake has been recommended to me.
It is a very long time since I've played the OMs. Donkey's years in fact. But I didn't ever feel when I was nicking everything I could lay my hands on, that I was performing a heist. I may well have been doing that but that didn't feel like my primary reason for being. R Soul said it earlier:
Quote:
I don't like the change in Garrett's personality. "First I stole to survive, then I survived to steal"
It feels a bit off. But apparently I'm getting this as a belated birthday present. I've always been averse to taking anyone else's opinion as fact or reason for not doing something. I'm pretty contrary and even in my old age I still tend to do the opposite of what anyone tells me. I like to make up my own mind. I pre-bought TDS and was disappointed but to me, that's no reason for not trying something else. Story has always been really important and I expect it will be the story that I judge this on.

Ive wondered if the reason for weaker writing (and word choice) is not because it is being first written in French and then translated. It could be fantastic in one's native language, but translation always takes something away. I've not followed closely enough; is the writer a French Canadian?
Stephen Gallagher's the narrative director and Rhianna Pratchett's working on the game. There are other writers but they haven't been made public.
One reason why the delivery sounds especially awkward is that when Eidos Montreal removed the majority of the profanity from the game, they did so without re-recording the lines. They replaced every instance of "fuck" with "frig". People who went hands-on said it sounds dreadful.

game looks fantastic, TTLG complains anyway.
Try to see this from the proper perspective: Imagine you're a filmmaker. Imagine you've just completed a film about scuba diving. Now, regardless of whether or not your film turns out to be the best damn film about scuba diving in motion picture history, you're bound to get yourself on some people's bad side if you choose to name your scuba diving epic "A Clockwork Orange".

Why not replace "fuck" with "taff"? Can't go wrong with another desperate, last ditch attempt to appease the fanbase.

That's a very strange perspective.

Makes perfect sense. Just call the protagonist Alex. And hey, didn't they have a scene in which some police thugs hold McDowell's head under water in Kubrick's film? There's your vague connection to scuba diving! DNA of the franchise, folks!:thumb:

Well done, even some of my most over-exaggerated examples that I've come up with haven't been that crazy and far-fetched. :p

Still, if someone had told me 10 years ago, that they'd eventually release a Thief game that I would grow to hate with every fibre of my being, I would have called that crazy and far-fetched too.

Yeah, it's definitely not like they wanted to make a good game. This game only exists because they hate you. You're right.
