Wow, so that screenshot posted by Brother Inquisitor is legit? I thought it was a bad joke. I really think this is the result of translation. I'd bet the dialog was written in French first and translated to English. That would explain the lack of subtlety.
Yep. Here you go:

Well, Hitman shows NPC locations, but yeah, this kind of futuristic looking map doesn't appeal to me. I miss the old, crude, drawings from the old games.
I meant the fact that you press X to garrote (Garrett) people in
Absolution :P
AC maps make perfect sense because 1) they're built on Animus data and 2) they point out all kinds of activities and side missions and the like which are pretty much impossible to find without a map, be it a minimap on the HUD or a full-size map.
NuThief's map just plain sucks. And, tbh, I hated the design of
Deus Ex: Human Revolution's map too. The minimap was ok, but the fullsize map was pretty much sh*t.

I prefer this to TDS' maps, which were so useless I forgot that the M key even existed.
The maps in TDS were useless because the levels were so small it wasn't really possible to get lost in them. Some of the maps in TDP were even worse. Good luck trying to find your way around Bonehoard or the Lost City using the in-game maps.

Wait, you guys used maps in the originals? :weird: :laff:

#121 While playing AD&D you are asked to make a map of the cave system you just entered. At the heart of the cave (and after collecting the loot) your companions ask for the map in an effort to find the way out again. You produce only a piece of paper with a large circle drawn on it, it's labeled: CAVE. After receiving several threatening glares you reply in complete innocence, "What?"

http://i.imgur.com/ry2hApy.pngThat the maps reflected the narrative helped with the immersion. I'm not sure "
Oh, you're invading the mad realm of a chaos god? Have this handy map of every nook and cranny!" would have had the same panache.
I mean, that map there throws in a
4 dimensional cube for shits and giggles, yet still accurately represents most of the level in a very generalized fashion.

I know what the logic behind making the maps like that was. It doesn't change the fact that in terms of navigation, the maps were so useless they might as well not have existed at all.
I think the best solution would have been to do what they did in Casing The Joint in T2, where the map was accurate but only showed the parts you had already explored... but of course, there was no automap feature in the original TDP.

I have to concur that the map totally blows, both aesthetically and functionally. Would have much rather had something like the original games or even a requirement in some missions (obviously wouldn't make sense in an area you're familiar with) that you need to find a map, or reference one hanging somewhere a'la Dishonored.

All I need from the map is to know which way to face.
