It might have something to do with the fact that Quake 1 and Thief 1/G both have absolutely no coloured lighting. I always found that interesting, forcing the mapper to do interesting things with lighting without having to resort to cheap colour effects.
Interestingly enough, Thief 2, with its coloured lighting, rather than make me think of Quake, makes me think of Unreal. System Shock 2 as well. In fact before I knew better I thought SS2 ran on the Unreal engine.

The apparent "success" of Neverwinter Nights is just a delusion that only fools those unfortunate ones amongst us who haven't witnessed the glory of the classic CRPGs of the days gone by, such as Ultima and Might and Magic
This is kind of off topic, but it's hilarious seeing those two series brought up so much because I think Ultima (at least I-III) and M&M might rank among my least favorite games of all time, at least as far as 80's to mid 90's CRPG's go.

This explains why I'm always reminded of Quake when I play through Thief Gold.
If you switched to Software mode in your graphics settings (which is no longer possible after Ddfix and NewDark), you'd notice an uncanny resemblance between Thief and the Quake 1 engine

Ultima Online's peak user count wasn't much higher than Neverwinter Nights, which is the game that popularized the genre. So not only was Ultima *not* the first MMO, the first popular and graphical MMO predated it by 6 years.
*cough*
Obviously, someone needs to be educated on the terms he is using.... lol
Ultima Online was the FIRST morpg (multi-player online role playing game) to reach 100,000 subscribers, making it the first, and I quote Richard Garriott here, mmorpg (*massively* multi-player online role playing game). I repeat, Ultima Online was the first, morpg to reach 100,000 subscribers. The first mmorpg, the term that Garriott coined, and my only point about it all along.
And to whoever challenged my point that Ultima was the first successful computer role playing game series ever, Ultima I was the first series of computer role playing games, meaning that it was the first computer role playing game that demanded a sequel, which makes it the first *successful* computer role game series ever, which again, was my only point about it all along.

those unfortunate ones amongst us who haven't witnessed the glory of the classic CRPGs of the days gone by, such as Ultima and Might and Magic - the shining beacons of Inspiration and Love of true CRPG in its purest and most pulchritudinous form bought Ultima Online and immortalised its legendary status in the sacred halls of cult fandom. :ebil:
I can only assume that this little timeless gem is directed at none other than the Mighty Goldmoon Dawn (applause). Brother Tomi, thou wouldst do well to rein it in a bit. I have played them all. I love all manner of crpg. Planescape: Torment is one of my favorite games, and I play it once every year. After the 2004 debacle though, no, I have strayed from gaming. I certainly am not alone in this phenomenon! Certainly not worthy of belonging in a looney bin, or are we growing up a slight bit, perhaps looking within a little, and finally getting past all that mean bullying stuff. Did I miss something in my *cough* absence, which btw, was absolutely fantastic!!!!!! Granted, I do enjoy reading Subjectives posts, I always have. But not being able to see neither hide not hair of him, believe this or not, the forum seemed a lot better! I mean seriously, it made me finally see dethtoll for dethtoll too. Not seeing him at Subbys sidekick gave me a new perspective. This guy really is that pissed about shit! Its best to just let him be. lol Peace.

Richard Garriott invented and perpetuated online role play gaming

Having the biggest success (even if you coin a phrase based on that success) is slightly different from inventing something, which is what you claimed originally. It's like saying George Lucas invented science fiction movies or saying Mark Zuckerberg invented social media. That's not to say that these things weren't important milestones...

I know.
Now, Im gonna have some fun here, so pay attention. In light of the dreadful lack of education on this here subforum on the history of computer role playing, that Thief is indeed a part of (just ask Stellmach (I assure you he knows better than you)) I decided to go ahead and just throw that in there, knowing that you clowns would find it as a last resort, once you had brought yourself up to speed on some history of course. mmo... lol
I thought they were telling me with enormous conviction earlier that Ultima Online was crap and wasnt the first whatever they were saying. Now, they understand the error of their ways and instead of making peace with *themselves* they take the actual bait which is so ridiculous even Al Gore would laugh. I think it just kills some of you to find out after all your raving and drooling that Richard Garriott blazed the trail for your everquests and warcrafts and every other piece of junk out there today. Come back.
Renzatic on 18/2/2014 at 03:17
No one ever said UO was crap, just that it wasn't the first MMO. I should know better than to contradict someone's abject hero worship on the internet, but Garriott didn't make the first online multiplayer role playing game. That's right. He didn't. No matter how you try to spin it. He didn't.
So before you call someone else ignorant, make sure you at least know what the hell you're talking about.
LaffyTaffy420 on 18/2/2014 at 03:19
Clearly in an argument when you're proven wrong what you're supposed to do is claim that you said that on purpose just to have a laugh at the people who would point out that you were wrong becuase somehow that makes you right because if anyone on the internet ever reacts in a way that you expected them to, such as correcting something you said that was wrong, that means you are right about everything ever because green arrow said so and so i did obama.

Wait, Im confused. Are you talking to me, or them?!
MORPG - Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game
MMORPG - *MASSIVELY* Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game.
These guys, they actually used the term mmo, that Richard Garriott created, and said that his own game, which he invented the term for (thats right mmo) wasnt the first mmo! How can that be?! Ultima Online, again, was the very first.... you guessed it! Thats right, mmorpg. And you remember what that means already from my previous 20 posts, right?
Brother Renzatic.
