After watching the second episode, I think I have to concur with RBJ re Showtime fumbling it. He's supposed to be a sociopath but they want him to be a nice guy. If I wanted that I wouldn't be watching a show about a serial killer. I'd never watched anything on Showtime before, but I had heard of some stuff on it like Six Feet Under, Queer as Folk, The L Word and now come to think of it, what's with all the gay shows? Maybe it should be called GayTv or something like that. Anyway, it seemed odd that that the clip from Deadwood that Scots seemed much more family un-friendly than what I've seen of Dexter, while the former is a western and the latter is about sick killer killing sick killers. Lastly, I'd like to nitpick the "messages" the body-chopper is leaving him. What makes this serial killer decide to go after the forensic blood spatter analysis dude? I hope they don't for a "it takes a killer to spot a killer" explanation, because that's just idiotic sounding.
The Showtime site lets you read the (
http://www.sho.com/site/dexter/book.do) first chapter in the book on which the show is based. Source books are usually supposed to be better than what winds up on film, but I guess I'm not really into the kind of monologues Dexter goes into.
I've never seen Weeds (or any other Showtime show), but I had heard it was supposed to be pretty good. At first I thought I might not be able to enjoy or "get" it because of my lack of experience with drugs, but now it occurs to me that that should apply just as much to Dexter. That reminds me of (
http://armedndangerous.blogspot.com/2002_06_02_armedndangerous_archive.html#77482059) something Eric S Raymond wrote that agnostic from gnxp linked to on his own blog (although oddly enough I found the pages agnostic suggested plenty repulsive as well). Contra to ESR, I am rather puritanical, but despite himself being married and having had much more time on (and of course off, but most of meatspace isn't as much a hive of scum and villainy as cyberspace) the internet to get desensitized to filth (like the type exhibited in (
http://rpgcodex.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=16003) this thread) he seemed to share much of my repulsion. One of the things that sickens me about e-filth is the rampant misogyny, which is a bit odd because I like a lot of horribly misogynist punk songs. It's kind of similar to my reaction to Slaughterhouse Five. The main character didn't care about his fate, so I couldn't care either. The focal point of the aforementioned crap seems to be on misery and abuse, which most people would naturally try to avoid and would have a very negative gut reaction to. Now I suppose someone will say, well what's wrong with you (or Americans in general) that you can't stand something like that but you're content to be entertained with stories about murder and war and whatnot. Aside from the distinct possiblity that I'm just a deranged weirdo and my countrymen are as well to a lesser extent, I think the difference is the detatchment. We're not confronted with that much visceral imagery (it cuts away in Dexter when he turns on the power tools), so you think more about the ramifications in the story about the act rather than what actually went down.
Apologies for the rambling.
In fitting with the theme, here's (

I enjoyed the show, it was the little things with his OCD that I thought added a nice touch.

I liked the show too, and unlike TGGP, I have no problem with Dexter being shown up as a likable guy. In fact, I think this makes him more interesting. But then again, I don't really see him as a serial killer, but more as a ruthless vigilante with his own "code of honor".
If it will help with deciding whether to take my opinion into account, here are the other shows I'm currently following: Lost, Prison Break, The O.C., Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, both Stargates, The 4400, Eureka. I'm not sure which one I like most, but since I'm a Sci-Fi afficionado, it won't be fair to compare anything with the Sci-Fi bunch. From the rest, I guess Prison Break gets my pick. I watched the first season of The Shield a year ago and liked it quite a bit, but don't have time to start watching its whole backlog. I haven't watched these yet, but plan to and think I'll like them too - The Sopranos, Deadwood, Band of Brothers. Not much, but all I can offer. ;)

Sorry, shouldn't have used an acronym. He clearly has a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

A couple of things:
- HBO did Six Feet Under, not Showtime, and it's one of the best television shows ever produced.
- As for the homosexual aspect, it's actually a minor part of the overall show while being a major character arc for one of the main characters in the first season and makes a resurgence in the third season. Basically, don't watch SFU if you think the sight of two guys simulating ass-fucking is going to make you ill.
- If you're referring to the Deadwood fight I linked in the Best Fight Scenes thread then there are a few things you should be aware of - that was a particularly brutal fight scene and only one of perhaps two or three that featured in the entirety of Deadwood. Despite that, there were still several throat-slittings, shootings, hangings and so on.
- If you think one paltry serial killer has got jackshit on the old West, you need to review your history, my friend.
- Also, no fucking idiot cocksucker would ever watch Deadwood with his family (assuming you mean younger children or with your parents or the like) in the fucking room, that would make for an uncomfortable viewing experience for everyone involved unless they were all extremely comfortable with profanity, sex, violence and immorality.
- HBO make me rock out with my cock out.
