I think this thread is beginning to carom off in on of those usual unforseen strange tangents, but what the hell:

The best phrase I've ever heard to describe the act is 'waxing the dolphin', which I picked up from a surfer when I was at school in California a long time ago. I still use it, and his remedy for sunburns.
